Love Mercury, but Ford is taking Lincoln downmarket to where Mercury used to be.
They are planning a Lincoln based upon the Focus - isn't that the dumbest thing you ever heard?

but,,,CHROME STILL RULES!!!

They've always done whacky things like that. Remember the Mercury Bobcat? It was a Ford Pinto with cloth upholstery and pinstripes.

No dumber than the Cadillac that was based on the Cavalier, but still pretty dumb

There are 1,712 Mercury dealers, but of that 1,712 only 276 are "stand-alone" Lincoln Mercury dealers. That means that 1,436 are either Ford/Lincoln/Mercury or Ford/Mercury dealers.
The FM and FLM dealers will do fine. They will substitute their Mercury sales with the Ford equivalent product, and enjoy ease of training, parts stocking simplification, etc. as well as a better Lincoln lineup.
The stand-alone LM dealers will struggle, especially if their location doesn't have a true luxury car buyer demographic. Look for Lincoln to expect big $$$ facility upgrades from the surviving dealerships. Many will simply consolidate with the nearest Ford dealer as their loyal Mercury customer base is abandoned.
Mercury didn't fail because of a lack of sales, it failed because of a lack of unique product!
