Dennis wrote: Thats weird, it says im in Castella CA, and im in Red Bluff, CA... Anyway, all transmissions have drain and fill plugs, period. I suggest everyone who owns one of these cars, buy a service manual. Also, I read where people talk about having a hard time getting the car out of park on an incline. Any car will do that if you let the park pin hold the car from rolling on a steep incline. Put the parking brake on first, then put the trans in park, and that won't happen. Dennis That is exactly my experience.

I purchased my grandfathers 2000 S-type with 35,000 miles on it for a *fair* price. When I brought it to the dealership the told me I needed upper and lover ball joints - a CV boot - new palstic coolant reserve jug - and brake pads all around...... MY ESTIMATE WAS $3,500. Is that fair? I paid 8,000 for the car and it was very DIRTY inside and out.
WHAT DO I DO WHERE DO I GO IN NEW YORK STATE.

I don't think all those things should be bad on it at 35000 miles. Somebody is trying to bust your head with that price. I've just changed brake pads on mine. Brake pads themselves cost less then $50. You should be able to change them your self. It's about 30 minutes of work. Dealers claim that brake pads on jag are hard to change, but they are not. It's like any other car. After all, it's just a ford.

My research, including Consumer Reports' latest survey, says buy an 2005 or later S-Type. Lots of problems with earlier models, but '05 owners report "average" reliability ~ which is better than you can expect with same year models of the BMW 5-Series or the Mercedes E and S Classes. Also better than many American and European models, plus a select few from Japan. Mechanics I consulted said, in general, the Volvo S-60 is maybe the most troublefree Euro car. But, as I see it, NOTHING looks better in the garage or on the steet than an S-Type. Subjectivity counts.

I have 2000 S- Type 4.0 Hardly used 20,000 miles on the clock. It has developed an awful hollow knocking sound from the rt rear quadrant, but only when hot and traveling slowly over uneven pavement. My mechanic, a Jaguar enthusiast and Brown's Lane trained cannot find a thing wrong. It sounds like a collapsed shock at times......but the main man has checked from stem to stern....nada! Any ideas?

It's absolutely clean, but I am concerned about the Ford 5R55N transmission, A/C/heating and other miscellaneous (and likely expensive) mechanical experiences due to the age of the parts, even though the km's are low. Am I buying headaches in a few thousand km? Jim I have gone through a similar experience...same car as the one you are loking at. I have had no grief but advise spending $100 and a case of beer to a Jaguar trained mechanic and have him go over every inch of the car.....hopefully he's an enthusiast and will be honest with you. I've replaced the ball joints, you can purchase it separately but you will need to find a shop to press the old ones out and put the new ones in.Not an easy task but it can be done, i've purchased set of ball joints $160/SET and paid a mechanic $100 to install it, not too bad considering that if you buy entire assembly it will cost you $250 each side just for parts
