That is a bad example. Yes, you will pay more in sales tax on gasoline and, yes, I'm no happier about it than anyone else.
But.
At least they did fix the "tax on a tax" thing some time ago. The sales tax is charged on the price of the gasoline before the transportation taxes are tacked on. Or at least that's the way it's supposed to work now, although with the pump price now being "with all taxes included" & nobody breaking it out on your receipt then it's hard to know for sure.
Maybe they changed it for gasoline, but tax on tax is supposed to be illegal. Ever notice you license palte renewal? Your wheel tax is 10% of you excise tax, that is until you excise tax drops below $250.00, then the wheel tax is $25.00, no matter the escise tax.

Seems we never pay enough taxes, do we? Much of the problem with property taxes is the assessment, which is only an estimation of worth or a guess. The only time property, if ever, should be taxed is at the point of sale, when the value is known. Our forefathers paid tax on property becaused they derived income from that property and I do not believe they paid income tax. How many homes today provide income? I believe everyone should pay taxes. The only fair tax is a comsumption tax with a maximum percentage allowed. The government (Federal, State, Local, all taxes combined) should not exceed a certain percentage, a cap. These taxes are paid according to what you spend (might encourage savings). All other taxes should be abolished first, however. Then our lawmakers could not hold us hostage by implementing new and higher rates and people would know how much they will pay. If they want a new car for example, and want a second job to pay for it, they know how much they need to make less the percentage for taxes, and can plan accordingly. Tax deductions that currently are available are not always available to everyone and they change. At the federal level, two examples are education credits and student loan interest. These credits and deductions were not available years ago, so those students lost out. And guess what, they can be taken away by our lawmakers at any time. I for one would like to be able to budget and plan for my future witohout gambling. You can plan for things under the current tax system but you just never know what will be taken away or what new taxes will be added. Seems once we have a tax, any tax, it never goes away. We only are given new taxes.
No one should ever lose a home they have paid, or are paying for because they can not afford to rent from the government, pay taxes.

900+will be eliminated. 144 will remain statewide until the referendum, which could take it down to 92
Any township assessor with 15,000 real estate parcels or less is eliminated on 7/1/08 and the duties revert to the county assessors. The trustee assessors will still have their trustee duties but the assessment duties revert to the county assessor. The township assessors with over 15,000 parcels will go through a township referendum in November. If the township voters decide to eliminate their township assessor all their duties revert to the county assessor on January 1, 2009. However HEA 1001 states the township assessor is "entitled" to finish out their term which wouldn't end until December 31, 2010. The question is what the heck does "entitled" mean.

The CAP should not be on "assessed value" but rather on the "amount paid by the property owner." Use of the so-called ASSESSED VALUE is another loophole for those in government to use to extort, coerce and take more monies from the taxpayers. Anyone who'll trust those in government deserves to be screwed.
Sure, there is never any change in the value of the dollar, or the value of your home, over time. Thus, if you paid only $60k decades ago for a Meridian Street Mansion, you should only be taxed on that amount? About the same as a new family buying their first home on the near Eastside. Your comment is proof the Gov. needs to work on public education next!

July 1, 2008 there will be like 827 trustees with no assessment duties - 42 (give or take one or two) township assessor who have over 15,000 parcels and 92 county assessors.

With victories in government few and far between, I feel this is a triumph for Indiana. I feel like our legislators and Daniels took charge of the situation and made the right moves. Usually in these situations, we, as citizens, get stuck with the "Well, its as good as it can be" or "I'm sorry, but the parties are fighting too much to do actual work" kind of resolutions. HEA 1001 tells me, "Hey, we were elected to make this the best place to live, and we're going to hold up our side of the bargain."

It's truly idi0tic. Countries didn't become communist by having benefits gradually increased; they became communists because a few people (some idealistic, some thugs) convinced a lot more people that communism was better than what they currently had, and they then killed or chased out the non-communist leaders.
And then they clamped down on the populace to make sure that they couldn't be chased out the same way.
The idea that public schools or student loans or medicare or social security lead directly to Stalin is just st*pid.

I wonder if the assessors will actually price the homes for what they could be sold for...or if the assessments will still be way off. Property taxes are inherently wrong. If you want to make an improvement to your home, you need to buy a permit. After paying for and making the improvement, how it is right for the government to say they can charge you more? They didn't anything to improve your home....you did the work or paid somebody to do it. I also do not agree with the idea that to government has the right to take away somebody's home that is paid off. So basically, with the current system, you can own the home...but not the property the home is on. Even if it was realistic to move the home...I doubt the government would let people take their home with them if they were unable to pay the PROPERTY TAXES....so I guess, technically we can't even own the home.
