The politicians/lawmakers at the signing party should realize that this bill is not the solution to the problem. It is only a very small step toward the eventual elimination of the UNFAIR property tax system. Once the property tax system is eliminated the tax payers cost of government will be reduced by 100's of millions of taxpayer dollars. Also the cost of government will be more equally shared by all people.

Now if the politicians/lawmakers would really concentrate on reducing the cost of government, they could really do the tax payers justice by reducing rather than increasing taxes.

Although I like the business that Mitch has brought to our state, I think him signing this bill is a fatal mistake. He is signing a blatantly obvious tax increase into law instead of focusing on cutting spending like a true conservative would and I believe many Republicans will lose their office because of it. I still have yet to see a better plan than the Fair Tax Plan to resolve the majority of our tax issues.

He is a crook, a liar, a scumbag who by the way is a freakin MILLIONAIRE, remember IPALCO? DO any of you actually believe he cares about the people in this State? Maybe you believe that George W. cares too. Ahhh, thats so sweet, NOT!

They are all politicians getting rich off the sweat of the people who work and support their State and Nation. Republican, Democrat, no matter, the only person looking out for your best interest is YOU or it should be!

That would be OK if the teachers and schools would actually use money set aside for supplies instead of staff dinners and other nonsense that has no bearing on education. How about investing in some technology for our students instead of things that just set us back even further?

No, the answer is take away the teachers union and the administrators and use that savings to pay for the things that should be supplied. Raising taxes has never solved any problem. Not ever, and I challenge anyone to show me where raising taxes on anything has solved any problem.

Correction, no relief 'till 2011. Property taxes are payed in the rears (sp?) so 2010 taxes are payed in 2011. by that time you will only have payed an extra 1% sales tax for three years or so. the good news for legislators is that they will have a cusion of cash and plenty of time to figure out other ways to redistribute wealth from those who work for a living and are productive to those who dont.

The kind of deal that only politicians see as a victory. Tax relief in 3 years, not after paying for three years of other tax increases. Smoke and Mirrors. The governor on down to every politician knows they are lieing, and playing games. I would like to see them all arrested and charged with the appropriate crime.

We have fell for more of the same crap. People this is a tax increase with the promise of lowering our taxes in the future. We still have two years of gouging left, with three bills this year and two next year. The schools can appeal that they need more money and the caps are lifted under this plan that our moronic governor is about to sign. This is not property tax relief, we have gotten a major screwing with a big tax increase. Will the new income tax increase Bart imposed be lifted with the state taking over pension obligations? You all know the answer to that question. This is all crap.
Exactly right!

Correcton on that for those in Marion County: TWO bills this year with a carry over for next year because "the reassessment delay" and "antiquated equipment" prevent sending out the 2006 replacement bill until June, etc., etc. Lower taxes?? HA! Property tax relief (like the rebate that the legislators set aside and I'll NEVER see)?? HA!

I think you mean "arrears," but your spelling probably works better for the situation.

Does our government realize that the Boston Tea Party was over a 3% tax. What is your tax rate, and do the people really have representation?

The CAP should not be on "assessed value" but rather on the "amount paid by the property owner." Use of the so-called ASSESSED VALUE is another loophole for those in government to use to extort, coerce and take more monies from the taxpayers. Anyone who'll trust those in government deserves to be screwed.
My purchase price was $40,000, my assessed valuation is $102,000. If I could find a buyer for this house at $102,000, I'd be out by midnight tomorrow.

There is immediate relief. Lawmakers are putting $870 million toward a really huge homestead credit for 2008 bills. This is paid for with the sales tax increase and some gambling money.

That will reduce bills on average statewide 30 percent.

Then in 2009 they use the sales tax money to take over property tax levies, such as schools, child welfare etc. and reduce the homestead credit. This is an ongoing permanent cut because those levies will no longer exist.

On top of all that there are the caps - 2 percent in 08; 1.5 percent in 09 and 1 percent in 2010. So if you are above those levels you get even more relief.

Everything has a price. If we don't cut the spending, the money has to come from somewhere. We really need to look at the spending. Everybody seems to want the spending to be cut by someone else. That doesn't work.

Now what taxes are they going to raise to make up for the shortage created by this bill. They damn sure won't cut their spending habits.
