Moral of the story: Indiana now has money in the bank, Kentucky is still behind and struggling to come up with the cash.

yup...you will save on property taxes and then take it in the end with increase income and sales.

the govenor should concentrate on reduced spending verses trying to figure out how to gouge taxpayers for more money.

I won't make that voting mistake a second time.

With my income and purchase trends, I will never equal the 2,100 additional dollars (under the old system) that I would have paid in property taxes per year on my little sh*tbox house in Broad Ripple. This is really going to help some people.

Like I keep saying, I am willing to pay taxes for the services I enjoy and public schools (even though I don't have kids). Just make it fair and equal.

We have fell for more of the same crap. People this is a tax increase with the promise of lowering our taxes in the future. We still have two years of gouging left, with three bills this year and two next year. The schools can appeal that they need more money and the caps are lifted under this plan that our moronic governor is about to sign. This is not property tax relief, we have gotten a major screwing with a big tax increase. Will the new income tax increase Bart imposed be lifted with the state taking over pension obligations? You all know the answer to that question. This is all crap.

is this sales tax going to be waived for school supplies? We are already required to send in teachers marking pens, kleenex and copy paper. School supplies run several hundred dollars per child on top of the unreasonable book rental fees. This sales tax will just ma6997ke that supply issue that much worse.

Fair and equal? Not if you live in Lake and St. Joseph counties.

The CAP should not be on "assessed value" but rather on the "amount paid by the property owner." Use of the so-called ASSESSED VALUE is another loophole for those in government to use to extort, coerce and take more monies from the taxpayers. Anyone who'll trust those in government deserves to be screwed.

You think you're getting soaked, how about all of us that pay 50% or more of our taxes to the schools, and we don't even have kids? At least you chose to have children. Part of that choice should encompass paying for their school supplies and book-rental fees. Thank your lucky stars there are thousands of taxpayers without children out there helping to pay for your child's education..

or, you could allow the schools to have a budget so that teachers could order these items and you wouldn't have to buy them separately. Your choice...raise your taxes for this, or supply them yourself...

I could not agree more...you almost don't want your house to be worth more than you paid for it!

This is not fair. Rich people are far more likely to buy things while traveling out of state, in New York, or Chicago, or over the internet, not at stores in Indiana, so they'll pay less in sales taxes and also less in property taxes. The old 3 legged stool - property, sales, and income taxes, worked well when balanced between those 3, and between individuals and businesses. We've been shifting more burden to individuals, from businesses, and now from property to sales/income. In each change, poorer and middle class people pay more, richer pay less.
And don't get started on retirees. Most retirees have lots of money and income! We shouldn't be cutting their taxes across the board to help the small number who actually have limited means. But now, the poor retiree who stays in Indiana will pay sales tax, while the rich one on a cruise (just to give an example) won't.

Property Tax Reform is not complete without local government consolidation and government spending cuts!

The bipartisan government-reform panel led by Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall Shepard and former Gov. Joe Kernan recommend the elimination of 1,155 units of government and 5,833 fewer elected officials statewide saving $400 million each year.

So, it doesn't seem right the increased sales tax is going into effect in a week and a half, but the lower property tax won't be until the assessments in 2010, am I understaning this right?

My only question to our legislature and elected officials is this, "Where do you think we are getting the money from to pay all these increases? I am quite sure no ones salary has increased at the rate of property tax, sales tax and gasoline price increases. Where is and when will the relief come - if ever?"
