The reason for the rear seat backs to fold using cords in the trunk is a security feature, not an oversight.
Some cars offer you the ability to lock the trunk even if you have access to the passenger compartment (such as is the case with a valet key). But that ability is worthless if you can just pop the seat backs down from inside the car. With the seat releases in the trunk, it secures the trunk, so the only access to the trunk is if the trunk can be opened, not the back way through the back seats. |
