frank, hey if it is a bearing wouldnt it make a sound all the time? couse the sound comes and goes and worked on it it all day,its getting frusterating!!!!
Yes bearing howl all the time or when you turn one way or the other beaing the front bearings are 2 bearings in 1. Fill more in on the sound and the frequency of the noise. Also did you check the center bearing?

Hello All
I have a 2003 3.9 V8. I noticed I had a headlight out the other day so I checked the bulbs and noticed I also had the opposite highbeam out. After replacing the bulbs, they still don't turn on. Now my dash lights go out, and my power steering is not working. This happens very rendom, but is getting more and more often. When I get in the car and start it up if the power sterring is working so is all the lights if not then none of them work. Also sometimes the headlights begin to work while I am driving, but not the dash or the power steering......any thought???
Hello i have the same thing happening to my 03 ls did you fine a fix ?

While we're on the subject of bearings, I recall there was a howl/hum issue at hwy speeds (80+) from the right rear. It appears only at higher road speeds.

I think someone said it was the half shaft but I wanted to be sure what the typical issue was. Anyone?

Just make sure that tire is not cupped if so that can make noise. Also the half shafts are CV shafts so no bearings in them. They are supported at the tire by a bearing that does go bad.(common) Unless your CV shaft boot is ripped open slinging grease don't worry about those.

I have a 2002 lincoln ls v8. Just bought it and no probs for 6 months. Now, when i first start it up in the morning, it revs up to 2000 rpm and takes 15 seconds to idle down to 700. Any clues ?

What was it doing before? It should spike up RPM when first started then go down in 15 seconds.

I GET THE SAME SMELL AND IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN I HAVE THE HEATER ON. SIMILAR TO YOU I DON'T SHOW ANY SIGNS OF LEAKAGE. MY ONLY THOUGHT IS THAT I'VE GOT SOMETHING GOING ON IN THE TRANS BUT THAT WOULDN'T EXPLAIN WHY I ONLY SMELL WHEN THE HEATER IS ON???
rlincoln....it is likely an o-ring malfunction in the valve cover. it was the one that seals the spark plug-coil sleeve on mine. The oil fills the sleave, runs back and exits through the sponge they wrap the spark plug wires with where it exits the valve cover.

Replacing the 2 dozen o-rings and cover gasket is no major undertaking, but doable. replacing them, plugs and coils ran over $500 in parts.

Seems that folks are replacing coils and don't need to. Once you get the valve covers off both sides, check the front camshaft chain and tensioner as these are a weak link on 3.9 V-8's. Since they are right there in front of you, best to do so.

Most of the time, the (COP) coil on plug simply short out on the head cavity due to the build up of engine oil as a result of the failed "spark plug" valve cover gaskets that come with the valve cover "gasket set". If you order valve cover gaskets only, you are wasting your time since the (4) four round gaskets located at each spark plug bore are what leak and cause the miss-firing.

Clean out the spark plug bore with brake parts cleaner, wipe and dry the area clean, put in a new set of spark plugs (if they're 50% used & while your at it), clean the boot & spring, again with brake parts cleaner and wipe clean and dry. Maybe a shot of Silicone spray on the boots for good measure then, insert the spring and boots onto the spark plugs. Once this is done, the coils will not short out due to the "moist" cavity. The coils are not the problem however, if you want to spend $50-$60 on new ones, they will come with the spring & boot as an assembly, at least Motorcraft parts do.

Miss-fire issue is solved when completed plus, you'll have a chance to save your V-8 by checking the secondary cam chain/tensioner. The primary chain/tensioner is from the crank to the first cam sprocket and you wont get much of a look at it without tearing the front half of the engine apart. To do that, you'll be tearing all of the front engine accessories out of the way too so, plan on that issue alone worth a pretty penny to have done. If not, wait for the chain/tensioner to fail then junk the car since the repairs will likely cost about 60%+ of the vehicle's value which involve an engine re-build or L.K.Q. replacement. The pistons hit the valves so, once that's done, head work is needed plus new cam chains/tensioners at minimum.

Amazing Ford built/approved cheap tensioners that are hard to get to ($$$$) over a couple of dollars.

To be clear, the miss-fire issue is no different than turning off a gas lawn mower. You push the metal "kill" button and it grounds out the spark from the coil thus, the engine slows to a stop. This is what the engine oil is doing in the spark plug well, the coil/spark shorts to the moisture rather than the spark plug so, no juice, no spark.

I have a 01 Ls V6. I have had a lot of the problems most of you have had already. My new problem now is sometimes my car wont start. The battery is good. If I let it sit there for a little bit and swear at it it usually will then start. This has happened about 5 times over the past couple weeks. Twice when I was driving the engine just cut off and died. The car didn't sputter at all before it died, it just shut off. I took it to a trusted mechanic and he found nothing. No codes said my coils were good. Drove it around let it run on parking lot. Ran perfect for him the whole time. Any Idea What the problem is. I'd hate for the wife and kids to get stranded or break down. But I can't fix what I Dont know. Thanks for any input.

Can some one tell me how I can get the code to my 2005 LS for the door? I looked on the trunk arm and it is not there...
It is supposed to be on the hinge part of the trunk. I couldnt find it there either. I went to a local dealer and they put it on a machine and got a code for me. It took all of 2 minutes. I knew someone there so i didnt pay. the salesman i bought the car from said it would cost $100 for them to get the code. Ask around, you might find a nice service rep that will hook you up.

Its not a h2O sensor its and O2 sensor. h20 is water."im having the same problem." And what problem would thes be??
