When American car makers offer me a 4-cyl diesel passenger car, in sedan and hatchback, that gets 50MPG like my VWs have done since the 1970s, I will buy American.
The VWs in my family have seen over 500,000 miles (1986 Model, made in PA actually, last year for US made VW) and the later Mexico built models are crossing 100,000, 250,000 and 325,000 miles -- with minimal upkeep. Last American auto we bought blew the motor in 60k miles and barely got 28mpg -- no thanks. I'll stick to more expensive parts that never fail and an average lifetime economy of 44mpg. |

do your research, American cars are only assembled here in the US, but %99 of the parts are made overseas, so next time you stick an American flag sticker on your precious MKS, to those who knows, your Ignoramous !

I'm not sure about 99%, but you do have a point, the line between "American" and "foreign" cars is all but obliterated. Buy the best car that meets your needs, not one that matches your political views. That way, the free market will work nicely. |

1 You're a one trick pony, aren't you? "Free market", as we practice in the good ole USofA. Whatever Americans want to buy, they will. Whatever they don't like, they wont buy. Sounds like a good system to me. By the way, big SUVS aren't appealing to the Japanese. If they liked them, Honda or Toyota or somebody would've made them for sale. They're an American thing. Well, they used to be, anyway. |

Japan, like most foreign countries, uses engine displacement and vehicle weight to compute vehicle taxes. It would be quite expensive to pay such a tax on a car weighing 5500+ lbs and powered by a 5.7 or 6L gasoline engine. The market there would be very limited, at best. The same is true of much of western Europe. GM's smaller cars do Ok there, but the larger ones are almost nonexistent.
