I've got a 2001 with 33's and I am having the same gas problem. I am getting about 12 to 14 mpg. I have heard that performance chips can make a difference, as well as upgrades in exhaust, and spark plugs distributer cables, anyone have any idea where I should start.

First of all, a lifted jeep with wide tires will get pretty poor mileage... it's just how it is. You can do alot to the engine, but mostly it's all about how you drive it. Try a cold air intake, spacers, and locking hubs... heck even a snorkle helps. If you do all of those, you can get around 18/20 to 22/25 without messing with your driving too much.... but like i said, driving is the main thing

I own a 99 tj 4.0 liter with 5 in of lift, I have 4.56 gears with 35 BFG MT. It has a Banks exhaust, a K&N air filter, and a Jet stage 2 chip i run all Royal Purple fluuids i get about 12-13mpg. I drive about 15/85 city/highway i tend to drive about 65 to 70 on the highway. I live at over 6000 feet the gears got me about 2 mpg and the exhaust air filter and chip got me a little more than 1 mpg.

We have a 1995 Wrangler, and it only gets about 10mpg as well. That's normally fine, except now it's our only vehicle and my husband drives about 80 miles round trip 5 days a week to work... talk about gas prices... they're are literally eating us out of house and home!

Let's stop and think about this for a minute. Step back and look at your Wrangler. What shape is it? It's a big ol' box. It's completely flat in the front, and the rear, the windshield sits almost vertical as well. Now hold your hand outside your window the next time you are doing 60mph. Feel that? That's wind. Wind + boxy design = poor mileage. And it gets worse when you throw on a lift kit, or add aggressive tires too. Now let's have a look at the engine. An inline six cylinder that has evolved some but basically was designed in the late 60's by AMC. It's heavy and not too incredibly efficient. If you have an automatic from before 03' that's just one more nail in the coffin as those don't have an overdrive. Yes you can reach 20mpg with a Wrangler. But you will have to use smaller tires, and hope you have the manual along with 3.07 gears that were stock on some. And you have to drive it like an old blue hair.

I have a 95 wrangler with a 2.5 5 speed. The best I can pull is 16.5 per gallon. I know its running rich and I have replaced the ox. sensor. Any ideas on how to lean this pig out a bit?

I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with only 3,600 miles on it. Today was the second time back to the dealer for the key being stuck in the ignition, just wondering if anyone has heard about this?

I have a 2001 TJ with a airaid cold air intake, throttle body spacer and bosch platinum spark plugs. I have used semi synthetic oils since my purchase and have approx 64k miles on it right now. My gears or stock and turnin 33"X12.50 tires on a 3" lift. I usually dont drive too much like a maniac but still only achieve approx 11 mpg. Jeeps are notorious for this sort of fuel guzzling.

My 98 Sahara did this too. Luckily since the whole interior (and most other parts) come off with a phillips head I was able to find the problem.

On mine the little metal arm that connect the steering interlock to the ignition key had come out of its hole.

I just put it back in and twisted it slightly to tighten it up and that fixed it. That was about 2 years ago and no further probs.

Jeep Wrangler musts -- always have a phillips head screw driver and a pair of vise-grips in the console!

Hope this helps:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub...
I have a 2003 5-speed Wrangler-"X" with the 4.0L inline-6 ---- this link is my fuel economy for the past two years. It varies between 14 to 21 mpg, with an average of 17 mpg. The spreadsheet takes into account odometer error with the 31" diameter tires that I installed aftermarket.

P.S.--(scroll down to the *last* vehicle on that spreadsheet link ---

I've managed to get 322 miles out of a 19 gallon tank, and 60 mph seems to be my sweet-spot speed for fuel economy. Anything on the interstate exceeding 70 mph really sucks the gas.

I've even found that at 70+ mph speeds, it doesn't matter if you're in 4th or 5th gear -- you get the same fuel economy (~16 - 17 mpg). But in 4th gear I can at least set the cruise and not have it slow down on a slight incline.

P.S.2:

my 2003 5-speed Wrangler-X is speed governed at 95 mph according to the speedometer (reachable only in 4th gear, not 5th). But with 31" diameter tires, it's *actual* top speed is 101 mph, as measured by a Garmin satellite navigation unit! So basically, the larger tires allow the vehicle to go 6% faster than it would stock. The speed governor kicks in right at 101 mph every time, which doesn't matter because the engine doesn't have any more nuts after that anyway.

I've bought a 92 wrangler a couple of months ago. I've already lowered it five inches hoping to get back some power, but did not work. It's only a 4, I was not expecting a miracle. It still has a five inch lift on it and running 33 mud tires. I'am thinking of putting a 350 crate engine with 290hp. Is that to much power for the age of the jeep.

in response to mike, as long as the frame and suspension has not been stumped jumped all of its life, the jeep should be fine, save yourself a lot of hassle and wasted time and money and get the right adapters and mounts to install the chevy motor, i have done quite a few chevy swaps into older jeeps with no issues, if anyone has bought a jeep for there gas mileage, that was a mistake, many things affect your gas mieage, once you lift a jeep it allows the air to get under it and greatly affects the aero of it, i have a 2004 tj sport 4.0 automatic with three inches of lift and 33x12.50x16 parnelli jones dirt grips and get 17mpg around town if i drive it on the interstate 65 and faster it drinks the gas the hills around here makes it downshift constantly if you drive it in town or a lot of traffic turn the overdrive off that will help also i have learned that the rear drum brake adjusters have a tendancy to keep the shoes too tight causing a lot of drag, make sure the rubber dust shields are in place to keep the dirt out of the brakes and check the sliders on the front calipers. as far s getting good mpg out of a 4.0 or 2.5 put a good air filter on it, keep it cleaned, use good spark plugs, good gas,an aftermarket exhaust helps. most of all its a jeep not a chevette of escort

I have a 2000 TJ Sport with a throttle body spacer, custom K&N air intake, Bosch Plat4 plugs, Banks catback, and a hurst shifter. I am running the Hypertech ECU tuner on the 87 octane setting aswell. I'm running 30x9.5 BFG All Terrain KOs and get on average 16 mpg, but most of my driving is commuting at 45mph. The second you go above 70mph in these things you can practically see the gas gauge move after 10 miles. If having poor fuel economy run better spark plugs and can even hack off the factory intake tube and put a $40 K&N cone filter on it and will see about 2-3mpg more.
