Jeep Liberty hitch versus spare tire

We have a 2002 Liberty and we just purchased a pop up camper. When trying to hook up the hitch latch would not clear the spare tire by about 2 inches. We bought an extended hitch but we are still having a problem (not clearing by about an inch). We tried turning the spare tire holder upside down and we had just enough room to hook up .....problem solved...not quite. Now my husband insists that the door doesn't swing correctly with the spare turned upside down (weight distribution). Will this eventually cause a problem if we just leave it upside down? When we got back from camping my husband turned it back around.

i have the same thing with my liberty. just open the door a bit when hitching then close it when the hitch is seated on the ball
