I don't believe it. Americans will never give up their precious SUVs. NEVER.

With gasoline at all time high prices we should all trade in our gas guzzling monsters and save ourselves some money. Perhaps if we wait a little longer the government will offer some kind of incentive to trade them in. They already offer tax breaks for people who buy alternative fuel vehicles. It makes me wonder if the government hasn't been planning this for years. Electric cars have been around since the 1970's, only recently have they become viable due to advances in battery technology and electronics. My thought is that the government has been waiting to allow gas prices to rise to ridiculous levels until alternatives were readily available and relatively affordable. With the slew of hybrid vehicles available now it would seem the time has come. Keep your eye out for the car that runs on compressed air, it should be here in the next 2 years or so now that Tata motors is backing it.

This happened back in the 70's as well, personally, WOW is right I will not give up my Jeep, nor my pickup nor my STS Touring Cadillac.. First I dont drive a thousand miles to work every day...We drive sparingly during the week, and go on vacation 2 times a year..My wifes Caddy get decent gas milage for a V-8, my jeep isnt all that bad, and my Dodge pick up I too use sparingly.. But here is why I wont go for a small Pirhus , neon, small car, or however you say it or spell it, I want comfort, I want a car with some iron in front of me, because the morons driving these "little cars" are just as nuts going 60 just as an SUV, so I want protection for my wife and myself...Plus when I get in my vehicle I dont want to be scrunched in my seat...I had a "Accent" by Hyundia or however you spell it, and almost got killed, that ended my days in little cars..The problem is people go too fast, you know when the speed limit was 55, people save tons of money ingas, but today everyone is in a hurry, if the speed limit would drop to 55 do you have any idea how much gas would be saved just in one day?? A LOT.. This is why big trucking companies like Swift, Schnieder, are reducing the govenors on the big rigs to 63 MPH, Swift Transportation did a study on their Detroit engines by reducing the MPH to 63 they save in one month 23000 dollare in fuel savings alone, now there is proof in pudding, reduce the speed limit and people will save not only gas but lives as well.... Have a great holiday weekend and stay home save gas and let the oil companies swim in their reserve , I am....

The used car prices for these little cars will be outragous, and banks will give money to people that cant afford it and bingo repossesions galore...just like the housing problems.. 21 percent intrest just to save a buck on gas when their monthly payments for these little cars will jump a 100 percent think about it 300 a month for a car that when you sit in it you look around and the person next to you is touching your shoulder, the engine sits about 2 feet or less in front of you, you look behind you and see 2 car seats with your children sitting in them and you look out the windshield and see nothing but "BIG" trucks, SUV's, and you say is it worth our lives and my kids, maybe its time to change our lifestyle and stay home more...I feel a lot better when I put my 2 year old grandaughter in her car seat in the back of my Caddy or my jeep than a POS Accent, Cruiser, to save a buck... Sorry life is more precious than gallon of gas

Lowering the speed limit will not save lives, it will cost more. Idiots will still insist on going 80 mph in a 55 (driven on 22 lately?). What happens when a speeding car comes up on someone doing the speed limit and has nowhere to go? Now if we convinced all of the truck drivers with the 63 MPH governors to drive in both lanes that would slow people down. Technology is probably the best answer, perhaps people who receive multiple tickets for speeding and reckless driving should have their vehicle outfitted with a governor like the trucks have similar to what they do with DUI people and he breathalyzer that prevents the car from starting. Even more 'big brother' like we could have all speed limit signs send out a signal to the car's computer that limits the top speed to no more than 10 over to allow passing. We have cars that park themselves now, it is no stretch of the imagination to believe that cars will be driving themselves in sight of 10 years.

I loved my 1997 subaru legacy wagon. Sadly, when it was not worth the money to fix,(i kept it serviced and it had over 200,000 miles) I found myself in the market for another car. This 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee was too good to pass up. Fully loaded. The used car dealer let me take it by myself to my mechanic. He went over it for an hour and the only thing he found it needed was a new windshield and brakes. Blue book was $11,800. I got it for $6500. How can i pass up that? I needed a car fast (i have to get back and forth to work) and my mechanic said of the 4 cars he looked over, this was my best choice. I am far from a yuppie soccer mom, but i just love the way this jeep drives. I feel SAFE and comfortable in it. I get 13.2 miles per gallon.

I doubt many people, if any at all, have multiple tickets for speeding and reckless driving. The state police do NOTHING as far as traffic law enforcement. A total waste of taxpayer's money!

There are ways to deal with this but we Americans simply don't want to make compromises. For example, in Germany they have automated cameras with radar guns; if you exceed the speed limit by a predetermined amount, several days later you receive a photo of your car in the mail with your fine. These have been very effective on controlling speed on everything from the Autobahn to small towns. Of course, here we would scream "big brother" and file a pile of lawsuits. goingbrokefast wrote: Lowering the speed limit will not save lives, it will cost more. Hey everyone, here's a trick to try sometime....DO THE MATH!
I compared my explorer getting 18mpg to a car getting 25mpg. My fuel savings over 1 year? Can you guess?
$789.... sounds like alot right?
- Factor in the price of that replacement vehicle let's say $1500.
-Insurance for that addt; vehicle (have to keep SUV cause the cheap car would be worthless in the snow) Approx $240 per year
- Maintenance on that fuel saver (older cars need more maintenance) figure $200 per year
- So after 1 year, my costs are $1940
- Subtract my fuel savings of $789 and I am in the hole $651 for the first year.
- The second year (assuming prices stay at $4 per gallon) I am still paying for that initial investment in the car, and still have the same bills.
Yup. Rush out and buy those cheaper, less safe, tin cans. And be sure to help out the used car salesmen who are loving the markup!

And another thing...these headlines that say Americans are going to stay home this holiday because of higher fuel prices....
Let's say gas cost $2.55 per gallon last year at this time. A 15 gallong tank of gas cost $38.25
This year, that same 15 gallon tank of gas at $4.00 per gallon....$60.00
So $21.75 difference. Now lets says your trip involves 2 tanks (one there and one home) that is a $43.50 difference.
Hmmmm....$43.50 more for a 3 day weekend worth of activities....
Yup... let's cancel the whole trip!

Lots of assumptions there. Keep the SUV? Replacement is worthless in snow? Matter of perspective and driving skill, I guess. I commute in a Civic hybrid and have absolutely no trouble in the snow. I'm sure there's a difference vs. a 4WD SUV, but whatever the difference might be has had zero impact on where and when I drive. Maintenance on a used Civic is quite possibly less than on they typical SUV. Gas will not stay at $4.00/gallon, it is only going higher over the long run. If you only look at a short window in time like a couple years, it will almost always make sense to keep whatever you have. But after that short window is over, you'll be losing money and will keep losing money. In the end, this is really a matter of personal preference. Some people will choose to pay more for gas in exchange for the different features of larger cars. That's fine but they should have realistic expectations about what it will cost them in the long run. memyselfandi wrote: Hey everyone, here's a trick to try sometime....DO THE MATH! I dont see an ugly SUV anywhere , I like the Edge,Escape, Jeeps always have had class including my own "Limited ", which I agree with JeepGrandCheroke, and the Subaru's dont look bad either... And memyselfandi is right about keeping the Suv for winter, I drove my Accent one time in the winter , what a P O S..you know we have been lucky that last few winters, we will get hit with numerous big ones just like 93, 96, and where will the little cars be in junkyards and in snow banks, and yes the car salesmen will have big paychecks for a while till people wake up to say wow I am paying 3 to 4 hundred a month for a POS car or they wake up and its repossesed..., then its off to a buy here pay here for an SUV...

LOL finally all you morons who drive an SUV to work are feeling it hahahahhaha I LOVE IT!!!
Shouldn't have bought that under-engineered piece of scrap metal with the name Chevy or Ford on it ahahahhahah. People who drive SUVs should have to pay twice as much for gas since your vehicle is half as efficient. All you fat, lazy typical Joe Schmoe Americans, who would rather buy a garbage Explorer and get $2000 back to spend on FOOTBALL tickets, now have to pay up cause you didn't make an informed decision. All I have to say is GOOD FOR YA! AHhahahahahahah
