I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem my wife has been having with her 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited. The vehicle has 88K miles and runs well. About 2 months ago, the check engine light came on and wouldn't go off. My wife took it in for an early oil change and diagnostic. The oil change didn't solve the problem and the diagnostic showed nothing wrong. Then a few days later, the light went off. A few days later the light came back on again. She then brought the vehicle to a mechanic and, after diagnosing the vehicle for over 2 hours, decided that the gas cap needed to be replaced. The light went off. 2 days later, the light came back on again. Brought the vehicle back to the same mechanic who did a full oil change, tune-up and replaced the gas sensor. The light went off. That was yesterday. Today, the light came back on again. I refuse to bring it to another mechanic and have them "guess" at the problem, charge us an arm and a leg and wind up having the liht come back on a few days later. Any suggestions?

it is probably your throttle positioning sensor....u can turn your key on and off three times and it will pop up an error code then look it up online ....mine did the same thing and its the TPS sensor

I have a 2300 Jeep Liberty. I have noticed that when I have the lights on bright, I will hear a click and the lights will go to dim. This morning (dark and in the rain), the lights clicked and they went from dim to nothing. They came right back, but it really scared me. Would a relay (low or high beam) cause this?

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport, 6 cyl engine. The car is hesitating and shaking and the engine light flashes. The mechanic can't find what is wrong as it is daily and intermittent. It doesn't seem to happen when he has it in his possession.
Replaced one ignition coil a month ago with these same symptoms. New radiator three months ago. I have had an oil change last week. Most concerned about the shaking/hesitating and engine light flashing.
I have the same problem with my 02 jeep liberty sport. I have changed the radiator, got a tune up with coils and spark plugs replaced, and my jeep is still showing a misfire in the 4th cylinder. Also, white smoke is coming out of the exhaust and there is hesitation and shaking upon start up, followed by the flashing check engine light. When this happens I usually turn the jeep off, then back on again to get it to go away and mild down the shaking. Does anyone have any advice. I have checked the oil and the coolant and there are no signs of gray or white in the oil and antifreeze is just the color it should be.
No leaking anywhere either.
The guy did notice a little coolant on the coils.

I have a Jeep Liberty 2003 and the check engine light came on, I took it to the mechanic and the diagnostic was the Selenoid of the transmission. I went to Mopar store and bought the Selenoid that corresponds to the Bin # of my Liberty. I got the part and when I took it to the mechanic, he put the part and the Liberty works worst, it seems that the part doesn't belong to this Liberty, I went back where I bought it and they said that was the correct part for that Bin#. I hast passed 2 months and I still can't get my Liberty fixed. It seems that this Liberty has another transmission that the original one.

I have a 02 Liberty and the enging light also came on at about 80k. I tried replacig the gas cap with no luck. I tried a few other things but eventually just gave up. The light is still on and I have over 220K on vehicle now. If it runs with no problems just ignore it. But that's just my advice.

i have a 2005 jeep liberty renegade. i bought it with 45000 miles and recently it has begun to idle rough. also since purchasing my car the gas mileage has been decreasing and is now at 10 mpg(in the same driving conditions). i am aware that it is a suv and is also a v6 and im not expecting to get prius gas mileage but 10 seems a little too low. also the suspension squeks often when it is cold out is this normal?

Have a 2003 liberty ltd it hops around corners, put in any 4x4 mode and it feels like its binding in the rear and bangs and thumps when turning. Took it to a dealer had the diffs lubed and the guy actually tried to tell me you should'nt drive in 4 wheel if it's not snowing (huh?) any input.
My 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 3.7 v6 Was doing the same thing pulled the front drive shaft out and replaced the CV, joints it does not hop skip or jump around corners anymore and does not make that horable banging and clunking noise anymore it was a $1,900.00
dollar job but i did it at home for $500.00 bucks hope this helps

I would not recomend ignoring this issue as it is verry common in the jeep liberty i did the same and ignored the problem i inspected the exhaust and it is all 4 oxygen sensors i replaced the and the check engine light went off and hasent come back on i replaced them at 112,000 miles and i now have 280,000 miles no problems my brother on the other hand has a 2003 jeep liberty exact same problem his light came on at 91,000 and he ignoerd the problem he is now stuck with a broke down jeep he must replace the whole exhaust system inc, pipes cat, converter and muffler he only has 120,000 miles on his jeep his estimate is $4,300.00 bucks just spend 300 bucks now and save a fortune later

i have a 2002 jeep liberty and back in december the oil light came on and when the oil was checked it was and had just been chenged drove to beckley and back and it died before i even got it home the motor locked up completely in it i have no warrnty on it and i have had so much trouble finding a motor for it and a new one from jeep cost 6000.00 with a 600.00 core fee.
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition. I bought it new at the end of June 2001. About six years into owning it with only 56,ooo miles on it and regular oil changes a similar thing happened. My husband was driving it and the oil light came on. We had the oil changed two weeks before. Within 10minutes of the oil light coming on the motor made a funny sound and just quit. We ended up having to replace the motor. We had no warranty left. Jeep wouldn't do anything to help. I think it ended up almost costing $5000.00 to replace it. Although I haven't had any trouble with the engine since, I will never buy another Jeep product again. We had a similar issue with our GM Suburban--GM provided us with a brand new motor and full warranty, I only paid $1,400.

I have a 2002 Liberty and was told today the transmission needs to be replaced. I have the car services 3-4 times a year and it's in great condition. I thought these were to last much longer than 94,000 miles! Is this the norm?? I will be facing some major dollars for this.

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited 3.7L and it is now in the shop with the pistons shot. It is going to cost me over $2800 to have it fixed. The mechanic said that it is a flaw in the design and that he has already repaired others. I love my Jeep and have taken extremely good care of it. It just day before yesterday started spitting and sputtering and this is the end result. Why doesn't Chrysler want to take ownership in their mistakes??

To give everyone a heads up...I learned the hard way. I started out on my 2005 liberty with a small oil leak..a month later and. $2000.00 dolllars later in repairs..my catalytic converter was bad. It caused my jeep to sputter and stall. It built up back pressure in the block causing the crank seal to blow..thus the oil leak. It ruined the timing belt..spark plugs..wires.. etc. So if your experiencing sputtering when jur vehicle warms up...check the cat converter..and your throttle position sensor. The cost to repair it is much lower if u catch it before ur seals blow and oil gets into your oxygen sensor or spark plugs.
