I have a 2003 jeep liberty with 55,000 miles and I am having problems with the gear shift. When I put it in reverse and drive it's ok only when I put it back in park it's really hard. I have to push hard on it.

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport. The radio quit on me and the clock lights go on and off when they feel like it. The car won't start every ten days, Had the battery and the alternator checked out ok.The dealer told me the battery wires were corroded and cleaned them. Ten days later , no start! I am wondering if this is a wiring problem and a new radio might fix it. Dealer can not find the problem. What to do?

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty (78,000 miles)that has starting issues. I'll go to start it and it's dead, no lights, no nothing. Then twenty minutes later it will start and run fine. It does this about every twenty starts or so. The battery is only two months old and checked out fine. I had it towed to the dealer (wouldn't start) and they said it was the negative battery cable and replaced it, but it is still acting up. Any suggestions?

My jeep liberty has had the same problem for a while now. The check engine light has been on for so long now & they can't find anything wrong with it.

I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem my wife has been having with her 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited. The vehicle has 88K miles and runs well. About 2 months ago, the check engine light came on and wouldn't go off. My wife took it in for an early oil change and diagnostic. The oil change didn't solve the problem and the diagnostic showed nothing wrong. Then a few days later, the light went off. A few days later the light came back on again. She then brought the vehicle to a mechanic and, after diagnosing the vehicle for over 2 hours, decided that the gas cap needed to be replaced. The light went off. 2 days later, the light came back on again. Brought the vehicle back to the same mechanic who did a full oil change, tune-up and replaced the gas sensor. The light went off. That was yesterday. Today, the light came back on again. I refuse to bring it to another mechanic and have them "guess" at the problem, charge us an arm and a leg and wind up having the liht come back on a few days later. Any suggestions?

<quoted text>
what code was reported with that check engine light? you can usually back track into an issue when you know the codes. during fall a lot of codes will come up dealing with emissions and gas cap, gas distributors are starting to use addititves in their fuel, your computer may be confusing and thinking you dont have good fuel or have an evap leak

I have to say that I can't complain much about my Jeep. Its been good so far, until the car completely would not start on this past Friday. It started just fine all day and then Friday night, it just wouldn't work. The lights would come on, the windows would roll up and down, the radio would play, etc.(sluggishly, but eventually)Also, once all the other stuff started lighting up, if you tried to blow the horn or unlock the doors , everything would shut down. So I had it towed to a mechanic and now I'm being told the battery is bad, some wiring was damaged and had to be replaced and that it needs an alternator!$600+...has anybody heard of this happening with this car?! Have you had it happen? I feel like I'm getting snowed and ripped off and there's nothing I can do about it except pay because I need my car.
If all the electrical works, but the engine doesn't turn over when you turn the key, I would say it sounds like the starter. Have they checked that? It is definately not the battery. The battery will be low now, due to using the electrical while the car is off, but it will recharge with the alternator once running again. An easy test for a bad alternator/low battery is to boost the car. Chances are...it still won't work. Sound like the starter. Not sure about the horn and door result though. May be a built-in cut-off to prevent from draining the battery.

Has anyone had any issues with the 4x4 on the Liberty? I just bought a 2003 jeep libery sport and it keeps going into 4x4 on its own. I am wondering if this is a common problem.

Having problems with my 2002 jeep liberty limited. Bought it like 6 months ago and after 2 months of use it got overheated. Took it to the mechanic and he said the motor was dead but he would reconstruct it. The car worked ok but i had to keep bringing it in to the same mechanic to check it because it wasn't running like i bought it and the a/c got messed up and wasn't working on #1(low)(still doesn't work). Anyhow, 3 months later the same thing happened took it to another mechanic, the motor was dead. Had to replace the motor bought a used one and installed it. After a few weeks of using it, it started overheating again. Now the a/c also started blowing hot air whenever the car stoped moving. The car wont overheat when it's running, but if I stop because of traffic and stay without moving for a while it's start to get real hot. I'm worried about this issue, I was told by the mechanic that this was an issue that happens to all 2002 jeep libertys, nevertheless I don't have 3k more to spend, already wasted 3k twice to fix it and the car was 12k when I bought it. I just found out about the ball joints recall and will send it after I talk with the mechanic this weekend. Any ideas, advice or help anyone could offer? Thanks

Soooo crazy stuff with my 03 jeep liberty started out with the rear tailgate problem. Glass would open however door was stuck in lock position. First caused my battery to run out had to replace it. Shop said only dealer could fix this problem which ofcourse wasn't under warranty. So I thought ok just the back door no big deal. Well didnt have it fixed glass light was on and the rear door lock motor caught on fire. Filled my car with smoke and shorted out wires, oh but the door opens ha. Took it to a local shop the wouldnt even touch it. No headlights, no wipers, no console lights, door locks will not work the list goes on and on. Now its sitting at the dealer awaiting them to figure out the problem. Im thinking there really should be a recall on this tailgate door lock and the seats that stain so horribly!!!!!!!!!! Done with Dodges never buy another one!!!!!!!!!!

A few months ago my check engine light came on as well. I looked in the manual and it said that light would come on due to a loose gas cap or water/air in the gas tank. I let that tank of gas cycle through and sure enough, the light went off. I conducted a bit of an experiement and long story short I found out every time I bought gas at a particular station near my house the light came on and would not go off until that entire tank of gas had been used. Needless to say I have not bought gas from that station again and the light has never come back on.

TO EVERY ONE WHO HAS A JEEP LIBERTY OR WHO IS LOOKING TO BUY ONE!! I bought my 2007 Liberty in May 08. I have had nothing but problems with my Jeep, I would never recomend anyone to buy one. I have taken it into the shop 6 times for the same problems, my transmission has a very harsh shift from 1-2nd gear (does it every day when I am driving at a low speed under 20mph) and when it does this there is a lound clunking noise that shifts the whole body. At first the dealers said they did not know what the problem was because the diagnostic did not show any problems (well I am a female but I know more about cars than most dealerships would think) So on the 4th visit they said they found the problem, it was the tourk converter, NOT!!! They replaced it, the next day it was worse. So I called Chrysler, they are not help. I took it to a diff shop, they pulled the transmission and replaced some cluthes, then gave it back to me "fixed", YEAH RIGHT!!!. It was the same, harsh shifting, every day. I took it back, Chrysler would not authorize them to pull the transmission again, WTF! is what I was thinking. They told me to let it get worse and then bring it back in (what when it kills me, or breaks something so I can pay them more money) Any ways I contacted the Lemon-Law attorneys in MI, they said I have a case, you only have to take your car in 4 times with the same problem to meet the Lemon-Law standards. So please anyone with the same problems, the shop or Chrysler will not fix your Liberty, they do not know how, they are Lemons, just contact an attorny, they do all the work its less stressful than taking it back and forth to the shop, in my case leaving me without a vehicle for days at a time. Not only is my transmisson messed up the 4*4 is messed up but according to them "it works perfect", come on this is not my first 4*4. Good luck to every one in finding a solution to your troubles.

Is it really enganigin the 4x4 mode or is it just the light coming on. Could easily be a sensor loose or bad that is tripping the light to come on.

I have had almost all of the problems listed above. Here are some of my solutions / corrections / addition problems:
The hop in the corner may be due to lack of slip grease in the rear axle, did you recently have work done of the axles? In mine they went back and added some slip grease and it cleared right up.
The CD player problem is a problem with every Jeep eventually. I had the same stuck CD problem with a 6 disc in dash changer. Never got my CD's back, got a new CD player, few months later same problem.
Check engine light is the beginning of something bad. First I had the water pump go out, this caused the engine to overheat before the light even came on or started flashing. Basically wrecked the drivers side of the engine, had that side replaced under warranty thankfully.
Check engine light came on again just after 100K (out of warranty) due to the idle problem listed above. Ours would flash, shut off the engine and start it up and it would be fine, but the light would be on. Changed spark plugs, coils, fuel injectors, all to no luck. Then one day heard a tinking or light knocking noise. Had a slightly bent valve, knocked the rocker arm off, and cracked the block on the passenger side. So now I am replacing the passenger side of the engine (on my dime).
Other issues - windsheild wipers stopped working at 10k, was told there was an electrical recall that was never sent out and they fixed it.
All the recalls can be found anywhere you want to look.
Anyone want to buy a 2003 Jeep, 120,000 miles, engine runs like new?

I read about you liberty being stuck in 4 low and I too am having the same problem. unfortunately it's Christmas day, and no was is open. My girlfriend once could not get it out of 4 high and told me she just got so frustrated that she just push with all of her weight and it went back into 2 hi, she did not tell me that she was just sitting in garage in park engine not running. I think she bent or broke the linkage. How did you get yours fixed, is it external or internal linkage? any help would be great. If you don't mind. Thanks could you send e-mail to [email protected]

My 2002 Liberty Sport just today will not come out of 4WD Lo. Used it yesterday in the snow (we live on a hill, too), parked in my driveway, and left it in 4WD LO. The ignition is locked, the gear shift too (automatic).
I can't force the 4WD gear shift out of 4LO, and I applied a good amount of pressure. Called the dealership where I bought it, and all they could do was ask why I had it in 4 LO in the first place! Any suggestions?

My 2003 Liberty has a grinding noise that you only hear when it's bitterly cold out and you go over a speed bump or hit a rut in the road. It's a metal-on-metal sound. Took it in once and they said some screws hadn't been shortened as they should be and "supposedly" fixed it. However it's still doing it, but ONLY when it's very cold out. Any ideas?

I don't know if this might help some of you. I have a Jeep Liberty 2002. One night after work i was driving home and the vehicle started acting like it was possesed. The dome lights came in and went off on their own, and the same with the radio and dash lights and gauges. I'd never seen anything like it before. Turned out simply to be a bad battery. Haven't had a problem since. except the fan selector switch needs replaced.

Maybe you could have your front brake rotors checked for clearance on your pads. Mine has done this before in the cold. They really start to screech the slower you go.

Dear Mary,
I had a very similar issue with a Chevy Impala back in 2001. It came down to an attorney and we decided simply to call our local better business bureau. We submitted our complaints against GM and the dealers, and within a week we had our second transmission installed. We only paid a little of the labor. but it ran fine and traded it off within the week. Try it before you go to court.
