I am having problems with a 2004 liberty's ring and pinion gear. I had it replaced at 18,000 miles. Then have had the seal replaced twice since then till now at 57,000 miles. The rear end is making a horrible noise again! I am going to have to try and make Jeep fix it under warranty, which I am not sure they are going to want to do. Is anyone else having problems with this?

I had my Chysler 8.25 rear end go out at 60k. It was the same thing, bad pinion bearing. They had to replace the gears from the scoring. It doesn't seem to be the norm. Do you live up in the hills also? I used to live in the foothills, lots of steep driving.

I've just had to have my '04 Liberty's pinion and side bearings replaced. Not happy!!!! Barely 39,000 miles and out of 36k warranty. Rear end was making a loud noise, thought it was tire road noise until mechanic decided it was pinion problem.

Hi Keith I am, having the same problem. The whine started at about 12000 miles. I never took the time to have it fixed until now and I have 28000 miles on it. Randy

Hi Keith, Had the ring and pinion replaced...it is quiet for now. My Liberty is a 2004 model also. The rear axle is covered under the 7 year 70,000 mile powertrain warranty with a $100 deductible after the basic warranty is over.

2005 Jeep liberty. Pinion bearing went out (metallic grinding noise from rear axle) at 52,000 miles. Jeep "fixed" it and it's bad again at 56,000. It's in the (5-star) dealership now and they can't find the parts for it. May be down for 5-7 days.

My 2004 Liberty's transmission shifts hard or jerks going from 1st t 2nd gear and from 2nd to 1st. It only does this at very low speeds in the 10 - 25 mi range like stop and go in rush hour traffic or in parking lots. Also, at first the jeep would not start in park. When I shifted to neutral it started fine. i have had it in the jeep service 4 times. They replaced a sensor once and changed the computer code once. The first 2 times the transmission was fine for about a week. Then it would start jerking again. The last 2 time is was jerking after the leaving the dealer. The starting problem was fixed after the second trip to the service dept. The transmission still jerks. When I mentioned this to the new service manager. He said that this was normal for jeeps. I have an extended warranty that runs out in 5,000 miles. Other than this problem I love the jeep. Can you think of a solution?

i have a 2004 jeep liberty, my rear end just went out on me, the stock number is #435-2152E, but i can not find one any where in san antonio, texas. i called around and houston, texas is the close place to me, even with that i would have to have it shipped to me. i don't know if my rear end has senors, everone i call says they don't have a ABS end. if i buy the parts its going to cost my almost 1300.00 to fix. i am a single grandmother raising grandkids, do you have a suggestion for me where can i go for help and getting this fix.

same problem with my 09 Liberty Sprt, at 23K the rearend needed replacing due to a faulty factory bearing that is the cause of the failure, Jeep corp owned up to the warranty which would have set me back a good chunk of change, I wonder how many other Jeep owners are having to pay for repairs out of their own pocket, another of a long line of Jeep Corp production problems, I wish I would have made a better choice when I bought this liability.

after reading about all of the problems that we the consumers are having with our Jeep products I think it is safe to say that Jeep Corp has given us all the SHAFT, no other way to put it, you wonder why Jeep Corp would put out such a problematic vehicle, we the consumer have been taking the hit for to long, it is time we all make a stand, economic hard times have hit a lot of people and we do not need another financial liability, in a time that we must make every dollar count I surley do not plan on shelling out on a piece of junk that Jeep Corp is shoving down out throats, lets send Chryler Jeep Corp a piece of our mind and lets get them where it hurts by not buying and more of there products, it is time.

At 62K my 2004 Jeep Liberty started making "whinning noise". Dealer said was tire noise. Took to another shop and they said noise coming from rearend. Took it back to Chrysler and they, "oh yes, it's problen in rear end, but don't worry, it's still under warranty". Now 2 years and 12K later, same thing is happening. Chrysler says rearend needs to be rebuilt!!!!!!
I am irate!! 2 years, 12k! I have had all my required maintenance done on time and at the dealership. So I called Chrysler Corp who informed me that due to age and mileage they would NOT repair without charge.
I informed Chryler Corp. that not only would I not allow them to repair the car, I would NEVER purchase another Chrysler product.
As soon as it is repaired I am getting rid of it.

Sounds familiar. My wifes 05 Liberty developed a grinding noise at about 12,000mi. I've done all my own work for 40 years and I don't like other "mechanics" touching our cars if I can avoid it. It sounded like a wheel bearing so I jacked up the rear end, removed the wheels, brakes and axles in different stages and listened for any odd noises with a mechanics stethscope. There was a very obvious "bad bearing" noise coming from the RR outer wheel bearing so I made an appointment to have it looked at (under warranty). That afternoon the service guy called and said they needed to get the axle from LA (we were in San Diego). When we went to pick it up on day 3 the service mgr gleefully announced that the axle was fine and that the differential just needed servicing and they had done it as a "customer courtesy; no charge". I immediately smelled a rat. My first thought was "...damn right you serviced it no charge. At 12,000 mi it shouldn't need any attencion with the light duty use it gets.."
My next thought was, why did needing service cause the obvious noise of a faulty part? The mgr insisted the axle was fine in spite of what I heard.
Why did they attempt to order an axle if it was ok?
I suspect the diff had a problem and they fixed it on the sly and maybe did a bandaid patch job. Now at 110,000 the wife says the rear end groans in the morning for about 5-6 miles. Problem for us is, she is in San Diego working and I am in Flagstaff,AZ working. I may have to just cross my fingers it is OK until Christmas when I get back to SD. Rear ends that are treated easy, light duty daily commuting, shouldn't fail at 100,000 or anywhere near that.

Maybe I'm luckier than others. My 04 liberty hitt 117000 this summer and now needs rearend replacement. Local shop just called and estimated a good $1200 for parts and labor. Does that sound about right?

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty with 77,000 miles. The rear end started making noise at about 75,000 miles. I took it to the Jeep dealer here in Acapulco, Mexico. They said it needed a new ring an pinon. Going to cost around $3,500 USD for parts and labor and they tell me it will only have a 3 month warranty. I'm really disappointed the rear end would go out. I thought Jeeps were pretty bullet proof. It has been serviced on time every time and never abused. Wish I could get it back to the States for repair but not possible.

It's not your shocks.. Its your axle, it only makes the noise you turn bc the axles are being alittle twisted as you turn causing the noise..i have a jeep wrangler and its driving me nuts. Only doesnt in R, 1,2 gear while rounding a corner
