Don't believe you need a new transmission. All transmissions leave junk in the pan over time. Replaced my governor pressure/thermistor sensor and it fixed the problem. I originally took my jeep to a dealer and they sai d my transmission needed to be replaced (because they wanted my money)
Dealers don't "fix" things. They replace things.

Exact same problem in Massachusetts with an '07 wrangler Sahara
That's typical of Jeep transmissions, I think. I had two Cherokees (a 96 and 99) both with a 5-speed that were difficult to get into 2nd when it was cold. Either wind it out in first and just skip right to third, or short shifting can help, too.

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the transmission will shift into overdrive for about the first 30 minutes I drive it then it will no longer shift into overdrive.I changed the filter. Is it possible to take out the valve body and replace a couple spring and valves to fix this problem?

I do not understand. The Jeep is stuck in first gear and wont shift? Or the shifter is in drive but engine rev's and it wont even move? All I can pretty much tell you is that if you just start the jeep and go, when cold, it may rev really high before shifting. Overdrive will not engage until engine coolant and/or transmission fluid has reached normal operating temperature. The transmission may also not shift right if it is colder than -5 degrees out. Be nice to your jeep and let it warm up for 15 minutes before driving it in the cold. Good Luck!

I was reading on a couple other sites that the TPS (throttle position sensor) was a common problem for Jeeps. I've seen people come up with different symptoms and most was fixed by replacing the TPS.
Transmission problems... not shifting, shifting late, hard shift
Engine idle problem... sometimes revs out of nowhere, dies

I am having a problem with my jeep right now. Its like it all happened over night. At first it was taking a long time to shift into drive, then shifted hard into second, slipped into 3rd and slipped into 4th. I brought it to the transmission shop and they flushed the fluid and they said the pan was clean and there was not any burnt smells. But of course he suggested that the transmission be replaced. All seems a little weird to just happen over night. So I hooked a computer up to it and a code came out for high pressure... 2 things can cause this code to come up either you're slipping into gear so it trys to compensate for it by adding pressure or the ECM is getting a wrong reading from the TPS (if my research was right).
Today is the second day this has been going on and now the symptom has gotten different, its like its stuck in 3rd.
I will replace it today and keep posted

Please can some one advice me I'm so confused I own year Nov 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 TD 300,000 KM. I purchased the jeep in Feb 2006 within 6 weeks of me owning the automatic Transmission (Gearbox) had broken, got towed to a garage of which I never had much faith in them but would not drive so my hands were tied but after 5 months they returned my car to me (I live in France) I purchased a second hand transmission from a friend which had low mileage from rear end collision. I have noticed after a few months the accelerator was hard and that the jeep doesn't have her normal power especially pulling off and taking her up hill, thought I had a fuel blockage problem have asked my normal mechanic to help advice me but he cannot solve advised I take her to jeep. She drove but she would stick at 40Km and take a few minutes to move forwards and gain speed as normal but once driving she would do 150 Km no problems but the moment you slowed down you was back to square one again.
I have taken her to a Jeep dealership in France, they had found the problem and that she was repaired so I keenly collected her paid the bill of 450 euros for a pressure captor and transmission oil and I think gaskets or seals sorry all in French. Left the garage and within a few minutes noticed when slightly touching the accelerator she is over revving and erratic on gear changes went straight back to the dealer who retested her have now informed me I need a new (Gearbox) Automatic Transmission. Jeep in the Uk informed that possibly the 1st Garage did not reset the new transmission to the computer and advised that when the fault code which would relate to the original broken gearbox appears delete this out reset her, drive her and test again. Jeep in France says that my car is too old for this procedure is this true.
I have never had any problems until she left the jeep dealership PLEASE HELP

I have a 1996 G.C.L 5.2 4x4 the trans. lurches from first to second. after thast it goes though the gears fine. Down shifts fine. I checked the fluid had to add a little but it did not make a differance.Truck has 167000 on it and rebuilt tranney was installed at 115000. am at a loss please help.
Have someone check the Kick Down Cable (part # 52104352AA) It attaches at he top of ebgine and runs down the rear to attach directly to the transmission. This cable may be extremely kinked due to having to follow a rather limited space route... also can become corroded if covering becomes damaged. My Gc would take till 40-60 km per hr to shift to 2nd with revs over 3k. Then shift to 3rd at about 70 km per hr again with high revs. Replacing this cable (around $80 or so) solved the problem completely.

and just to make it interesting the problem is intermittent. Also shifts weird sometimes in higher gears then immediately throws the light with same code.
