Why do so many people say they "have the same problem"? What we need are how it got fixed.

Solutions please.

My 99 GJC airbag light comes on sometimes several times in a row, sometimes days with no light.

From what I have read, the clock spring in the steering wheel is most likely the cause, and fairly inexpensive to replace. Has anyone had the problem AFTER the repair?

Has anyone ever heard of an airbag inadvertently deploying?... or NOT working in an accident?

We need to know;
1-Is this a real problem or just a "dummy light".
2-What can happen if not repaired.
3-The proper repair that fixes the problem.
4-Has anyone had any REAL safety issues with the airbags.

Thanks. I'll keep posted with anything I learn.

Couldnt agree anymore with the previous comments, I too wory about the safety aspect incase I were to have an accident in my G.C. The differnece in mine vs. everyone else in this forum is I have an 00'(It is about to turn 160,000miles though) Mine seems to be the clockspring..when im idiling and turn the wheel hard left..it always chimes and displays the airbag light. Mine is a secondary vehicle primarily used for offroading so it dosent see a lot of mileage these days but is still an annoyance. anymore feedback as far as solutions would be great

Well having started the original post I have learnt that, there could be three parts, which could make the airbag, stay on.

1) The Clockspring - symptoms normally the horn, radio controls on steering wheel and cruse control fail.

2) Airbag module under the central consul could be faulty.

3) Seat sensor.

If you have any other parts to check, then post them!

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well. Same exact problem. Same exact diagnosis. I took it to more than one repair shop but no one would work on it except the Jeep dealership. Cost me $365 to fix mine. It was the airbag clockspring though.

How many instances of the same faulty sensor does it take for a recall. If there are a number here with the same issue, I wonder statistically, how many that represents across all Jeep owners.

I have the same exact issue with my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I just got off the phone with a local Jeep dealer and they said there is no recall for the clocksprings, however there is for some Chrystler minivans. Perhaps if enough of us complain about this issue we can get a recall, so hang on to your receipts and call your dealers. We shouldn't have to pay for something that we can't break, especially if its safety related.

Yesterday, after reading this series of comments, I went outside and tried turning my steering wheel slowly. When I got to the full left, the light came on. Again this morning, I got into the jeep and turned the wheel to the left, and the airgab light came on. I went back to the dealer this morning and talked to the Service Manager and showed him the postings. He tld me jeep does not use internet postings and used the tech manual. Of course the light would not come on while at the dealer while turning the steering wheel. I have made an appointment to have the clock spring looked at and if it is the problem, he said they would give me credit for the $110. I will keep you posted.
who can i complain to?

As all of you I have that same embarrassing air bag light and annoying dinging sound. I appreciate the feedback. I've also had air conditioning issues since we bought it (we are the original owners). Thanks. I will look into the clock spring.

Hi y'all:
I am glad that I found this site discussing the same problem I have. Not like you folks, mine is on a 93 ZJ, One Mech said to replace the clock spring, it costs $200 for the part.
Our local Jeep dealer asks for $2918 for parts and labor,,,,redeculas.
For myself I would change the clockspring as I trust your posts. I will update you if any new repair I would do.Thanks.

I also was having the airbag light/chime problem and it worsened to where the left turn sighal would not operate or the cruise would not work unless I hit the top of the steering column. Jeep dealer told me $300 for replacement of the clockspring. I opted to purchase it for $125 and replace it myself. I got instructions through google and after 1 hour my problem was solved. The repair was not worth $300 to my dealer. Do it yourself.

I own a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and I am having the same issue. I took it to the dealer they checked it out. They said they could not find the problem because it was not giving out any bad codes. They cleaned the Cluster they said. I was told it could be in the wiring harness which would cost $85.00 plus labor and tax or it could be the Cluster its self which costs $854.00 plus labor and tax. Mine doesnt make a noise just off and on... They said since their were not bad codes givin out that the air bag isn't faulty, now I just wonder if that is true or not... since this seems to be a huge problem for many, seems that it should be a recall issue ( that wont happen )

So where do we stand?? what is the problem???
Has anyone had it fixed???

I am joining this club. I have a 2005 Jeep with the airbag light dinging at me several times a day. I just went to dealer and they wanted $85 just to diagnose the problem.(not fix it)

I am truly saddened with my decision to not by a GM product. For over 30 years I drove nothing but GM. Never was I asked to pay for a diagnostic check.

Everytime I hear the ding I will be reminded of the GMC Envoy that I drove to 120,000 miles with very little trouble or maintenance dollars.

I have a 99 JGC and am having the exact same problem. I pulled the instrument cluster and cleaned the pins and the connector, but still have the prob. Any news?
Hello I have done all my work on my JGC myself. As I see everyone is having this airbag light problem after they have reached 100,000 miles or more. I have just ran into someone else with this problem as myself. From what I have gaither from searching on hear and her problem with her jeep. It is with the airbag module. Now there is this site that will re-progarm them for no more then $100.00 or no cost if they can't. I think everyone should call the chrysler and complain. then contact thier consumer protection agency. Because this is a very big saftey issue that the company should recall..
