I have asked this question before but was unable to save any answers :-( I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited.

It has been converted to LPG the AIRBAG LIGHT stays on once the engine is turned on. A suggestion was made about the coil in the steering wheel, but the horn & the radio controls on the steering wheel are working. I was told it could be the airbag unit near the park brake, which I will check. The long & short! Is there anything else I could look at before I take into the dealer? Or if anyone has had this problem?

Yes, My 1999 grand cherokee just started with the air bag light issues. I have 100000 miles on it and the air bag light keeps comming on and making that noise. Any information would be greatly appreciated. The last thing I want to do is go to a jeep dealer and pay 600 for another headace as I read earlier.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have been having the same problems with the air bag sensor. While driving the light and chime go off randomly and constantly. My theory is it's a crimped wire or something and I'm not opposed to pulling a fuse but can't identify a dedicated fuse. Any suggestions and/or repair estimate to fix it.

It is the clockspring in steering wheel assy. I had the same problem in 99 JGC and had to replace it. One way to confirm it is to leave engine idling and slowly rotate steering wheel. If clockspring is faulty, airbag light should always come on at a particular angle of the wheel.

I'm having same issue w/ my '99 JGC. It's been happening for the last 4-6 weeks -- very annoying.

@Rehan, what did it cost you to have the clockspring replaced, and was it at a dealer or independent shop? Thanks for the diagnostic BTW.

Hi:

Sorry for late reply. It cost about 250 at a dealer in Toronto.

Best regards

I took my 1999 Jeep GC into the dealer today to have the air-bag light repaired that keep going on and off. They said they reset the "codes" and checked all the terminals. Cost me $110 and the light went on about 1 mile from the dealer. I called them right back angily and told them I wasted $110. They told me to come back in and they would check the clockspring for another $237.00. From reading the comments above, this must be a problem with the 1999 Jeep GC.

This was one of the safety problems I bought with my vehicle. It is now clear that the Jeeps are cleverly engineered so that problems appear after warranty is over. Could it be the computer pgram that triggers a code at a certain mileage? Whatever it is we have been had. My a/c broke down and dealer repair is a very expensive option. I had to take out the broken re-circ. door to get air in. This is a safety issue during Canadian winters. No heat to defrost windshield, mirrors etc. I do not know what the missing door would do to the "sensitive" system but for the time being I will live with that. My left window has a mind of its own - it will operate only during sunshine. In winters it often stalls. I guess that is a safety issue.

Gary D please insist to the dealer that airbag is a safety concern and they will be held responsible. Upon my constant complaints I got a "discount" for clockspring replacement.

Yesterday, after reading this series of comments, I went outside and tried turning my steering wheel slowly. When I got to the full left, the light came on. Again this morning, I got into the jeep and turned the wheel to the left, and the airgab light came on. I went back to the dealer this morning and talked to the Service Manager and showed him the postings. He tld me jeep does not use internet postings and used the tech manual. Of course the light would not come on while at the dealer while turning the steering wheel. I have made an appointment to have the clock spring looked at and if it is the problem, he said they would give me credit for the $110. I will keep you posted.

I also have a 99 JGC with the problem of the Air Bag Light. I checked for codes and found None. I am told that it is controlled by the Body Module. Clock spring in the Steering wheel? I am a technical person, I will look into it.
thanks!

I am saddly pleased to know that I am not the only person going quietly insane to the randomly constant "ding" "ding"...."ding " of my airbag light as I drive my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited down the road. We should all unite and protest.

I have the same problem with my 1999 JGC, the air bag light will come on with any slight turning. However, there will be days or weeks where this is not a problem, then it will suddenly become a problem and go off every 5-10 seconds for an entire trip.
