I try to start it and it wants to start but it doesn't and its been raining alot lately just wondering if the engine is flooded with water or there could be another problem. Also about a week before this I was driving down the road and I was stopped at a light and it kept acting like it wanted to die. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Well, Mud, you're not alone. You've described the exact problem I've been having ever since I got mine used a year ago. Every time it rains heavily I experience the same thing. Hope somebody has some advice. Wish I did.

I had the same prob. w\my 94 jeep wrangler the chepist way to try first is to take off the distributer coil and dry it out and also dry all the two ends that it plugs on to then put it back on and give it a go if that works you should put some silicon around it so that it dosent happen again atleast for a while

It backfires like that when you stomp on the gas because the engine is too lean. Check fuel pump pressure, cam position sensor and crank position sensor. If these are ok, disconnect battery and pcm connectors. Remove PCM, when you reinstall it,DO NOT TIGHTEN the screws too tight, JUST SNUG. Clean connectors and put back together, I bet it stops.

I had the same problem with the hesitation when I hit the gas. I put in a full tank of gas and 2 hrs. later it started acting up. I was able to drive it, but that night I put dry gas in it and the next morning it didn't start. Now it's been in the shop for a week and they can't figure it out. They mechanics checked the fuel pressure, crank sensor, and even put a new computer in, and still no luck. I'm having it taken to another shop, to the dealer. Any ideas?

I have a 98 Jeep Wrangler that won't start. Turns over fine just won't start. Dealership cannot even hook it up to their diagnostic equipment because they say the PCM is out. If I replace this very expensive part, how do I know that this is the only problem? Can I try something else first?

1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl
Diagnostic said cam sensor (CMP sensor or switchplate-called all these names)
mechanic replaced this part and will start now but runs so rough it is undrivable-he says he has tested everything and it must be the computer-says he will tow it to a Jeep dealer and it will cost $700 for computer and $120 to program it plus labor-I am freaking out here. anyone have any ideas of what it could be other than the computer. I am so broke-lost my job and now no wheels.

98 Jeep cherokee Sport - 306,xxx miles - when 1st started, runs ok for 30 sec or so, drive off, boggs down & hesitates. Pull over, wait a minute (even on a 70 deg F morn) then take off - alls fine (no misses, hesitation, hint of trouble)'til the next time the engine "sits" for a while - any thoughts? questions for me? ideas?

Tnx

sounds like water in the gas. It's heavier than water and will collect at the bottom. When you start it gets pumped in and shuts down the engine, but he motion mixes the rest with the gas so it runs fine. Try putting a can of 'Sea Foam' through and that should fix it. May run a little rough at first, but this works great.

On my 98 cherokee the engine would die when out on a wet road. Got the cam sensor changed, it took care of the problem.

I am having this same problem. I have a friend with a snapon code scanner, he hooed up to my Cherokee and it will not comunicate with it. So I picked up a used PCM from a local junk yard and I seen the jeep run before they pulled it, It still will not run.
Did you ever figure out yours?
