Hi, I started experiencing the same issue. I replaced the crankshaft sensor and so far no issues. It would vary when it would stall, could go a hundred miles and nothing. Then it woukld stall 3 or 4 times. Always started right away when I pulled over right away, if i didnt it would take a while before it would again. Its a pretty simple fix part is around 40, and located by tranny and bell housing of engine. Hope this helps. I have a 99 grand cherokee with 152000. I love my jeep. wouldnt give it up for nothing!

I had an intermittent and seemingly random stalling problem. It would sometimes need to sit over an hour before it would restart. The dash light with the key crossed out would light up and I intitally thought it was the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module but it turned out that replacing the PCM on the firewall was the problem. The dealer quoted me $850 but I managed to find a refurbished one on ebay for $200 and it only took a little over half an hour with no special tools to install. It's been 6 months and haven't had a stall since. Hope this helps someone.
did you have to get the computer reprogrammed?

99 Grand Cherokee 4.0, 175K, 30k on full rebuild. Runs rough, low power, and pops thru intake while trying to accelerate between idle and 2000 rpm. Sometimes at idle it starts to surge as if quick tapping the gas pedal. Surging seems to follow a timed pattern, and while surging, the time between the surges get shorter. Once over 2000 rpm, engine runs like new. On highways car will buck and pop if rpm drops below 2000, but if I downshift, rpm jumps back up over 2000 and runs great. Yes, engine lite is on but codes only tell me to replace O2 sensors, which I have done twice. Any suggestions?

1999 JGCL had been stalling for months with no codes coming back and every mechanic telling me they couldn't "duplicate" the problem. After some research I decided to start with the crankshaft position sensor and the Jeep hasn't stalled since. I had a mechanic (NOT THE DEALERSHIP!!!) replace it for $168.00. Not that unreasonable considering the alternative.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and for months now it has been stalling with no warning. The first time it happened during rush hour in the fast lane on the highway. Now it has done it 7 times in the last 10 months. It runs great all other times and is well taken care of. The check engine light never comes on and 3 mechanics have said there is no reason for the stalling. Yesterday I couldn't keep it running trying to get off the road. I love Jeeps but this is not safe. It goes back to the shop tomorrow hopefully they can fix it before it causes an accident.

My problem resolved by replacing the crankshaft sensor. Paid $155.00 for part and labor. So far, three weeks and still running fine. The problem first appeared back in October, when I noticed slight hesitation while going up and down hills. Then next month, stalled will driving down middle of the expressway. I don't buy that mechanics can't find problem and I think I know why. When I took my JGC 2000 Laredo to my mechanic, they plugged in the ODB reader and it didn't pull/show any codes. But, I did see a PXXXX code appear on the odometer while restarting car. I remembered that pressing start key three times shows code on the odometer. I showed the mechanic the P0320 code and he was surprised. It made me wonder how many mechanics out there missed this. Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know what I saw. Make sure your mechanic checks for P codes on odometer! Not just ODB reader. God bless you all!

Three years ago my '99 would stall, usually when slowing for a light or traffic, and then wouldn't start even though it would crank. A friend used his code reader and it turned out to be the crank position sensor. I've got a small oil leak that appears on the bottom of the bell housing (probably the rear main seal) and I'm guessing the flywheel was causing some of that oil to deposit on the crank position sensor. When I removed the old one it was covered in a mix of gummy oil and fragments stuck to the magnet.(the crank position sensor works by a magnet detecting a certain position on the flywheel). Once the sensor was gummed up it could no longer sense the crank.

Less than $50 at a local parts shop, only one bolt, just a bear to get to because its on top of the transmission near the firewall.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited V8, Same problem as everybody else. But, I changed the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I have 109,000 miles. It would stall when going over 50 MPH no warning. Since the new part installed No stalling, until the other day. But I was coming to a stop. I heard maybe the Idle Air Contol Valve, not sure, anybody have any ideas, THX

I've had the same issue with our 2000 cherokee sport (97k). Mine is milder than what others have reported. It's only at stoplights that I have any issues. And usually only for the first half hour. After that it's okay, but it idles rough. Last week Firestone replaced the idle control sensor and it did nothing. I'll look into the other sensors and the PCM next and will report back. thanks for the info, folks!

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have been having many issues with it over the last 9 months. I am at my wits end, the car has 103K miles. We were told to replace the PCM that it was defective (this was by JEEP) yet they no longer manufacturer the part. I had to get an after market part and then have a mechanic shop install then back to Jeep to program. Car engines revs and stalls for no reason, won't pass California SMOG and after having the car in several times, fixing many different things JEEP is now telling me that the PCM is not a Calfornia PCM but a Federal PCM. I'm sure that if I was in another freakin' state the car still wouldn't run. Anyone, I mean anyone can tell me what the hell they were talking about and wouldn't they have caught that when they programmed it?

Replaced the crankshaft sensor yesterday but problem remains. I suppose the PCM is next. My mechanic has a friend who wrenches for a Jeep dealership nearby. We want to get some guidance on replacing it, maybe even get a peek at Jeep's repair bulletins and see if they have addressed this issue internally.

SO my jeep is stalling again! I changed the Crankshaft Position Sensor about a month ago. Then yesterday, was on a long drive, coming up to a lite it stalled, would not start for 30 minutes. Then went less than a mile and stalled again while driving 30mph, also took 30 minutes to start. Then once again went less than a mile stalled again while at 40mph, luckily was able to turn off the road. This is crazy, I just want to fix this problem, Im thinking PCM, any ideas would help greatly, thanks!

I replaced the crankshaft censor about a week ago (witch was code P1391) and it hasn't stalled on me since. but now my check engine light is back on and its still giving me P0320 code. and P0420. Witch is the catlic converter. This crap is getting on my nerves. I was told that there is a ring under the distributor cap and button that may have a wire on it. If that wire goes bad it can cause it to throw codes up and make it ride ruff. I'll check today we'll see. I was also told that if there is no ring there that its the speed censor witch makes NO since at all!! when are they ever going to fix this damn problem?

My mechanic "borrowed" his shop's diagnostic computer last weekend. No codes popped up, even when we got the Jeep to almost stall. So I figured that it had to be the PCM. Using the advice I found on here and other forums I avoided ACE and bought a rebuilt PCM from auto Computer Resources. While waiting on it to show I had a major episode on the first start one morning. It wouldn't start at first, then on second crank it started but it shut down within seconds. On subsequent cranks it would start and if I hammered the gas it would stay running until I let go, and then died. After about 6 cranks in total it started as usual, with the same idle problems. So I took it that morning to the local Jeep dealership and had them run their diagnostics on it. After two days in the shop they come up with a big zero. They had no idea what was causing the problem and wanted to keep it another week! I brought it home instead, as the PCM had arrived. My mechanic installed it two days ago. Knock on wood, but I've had no problems since. I'm not celebrating yet, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

So all toll, we threw $500 in sensor replacements and diagnostics at it before we replaced the PCM (for $275). Hopefully this has got it. If not, we'll be trading the Jeep in and moving on.

Just had the same problem with my 2006 Jeep. After a few wrong fixes, it turned out to be the ignition coil. Cheap and easy fix!
