PCM Code

Hope this helps someone...

Ran into a repetitive "Check Engine" MIL light after 62,000 miles with a small rough idle. Took the Cherokee to the Chrysler dealer and they insisted it was my gas cap causing the light to trip...which I found odd since I found out later the actual PCM code was Leak Detection Pump related. Gas cap replaced and light came right back on after 2 engine start/off cycles.

I broke down and purchased an Actron OBD II Auto Scaner and down loaded code P1494 "Incorrect input state detected for the Leak Detection Pump (LDP) pressure switch." Went back to the same Chrysler dealer (without the vehicle) and inquired about the code and was told the LDP swicth was bad and had to be replaced (part alone was $119.00).

Went back to the Jeep and started from the bottom up trouble shooting on my own after internet research. If it was a faulty LDP, then Code 1495 would have tripped. Started with inspecting the vacuum lines first and found the problem. There are two vacuum lines that run from the passenger side of the engine bay from the LDP, along the fire wall, to the drivers side of the engine and connected to the engine manifold (bellow the air fiter intake duct). One of the 90 degree boots became deteriorated and fell off the manifold coupling. Replaced the elbow, erased the PCM code (MIL light) and its been 2 months now with no repeat occurrences.

Attached is a link to a Emmisions Control document loaded with usefull to include PCM codes which also applied to Cherokee Jeeps I found on the internet. http://www.scribd.com/doc/3503856/Jeep-XJ-200...

Bottom line, the certified Chrysler dealership mechanics are not always right and I hope this info helps anyone else in the future. Always check the obvious first before spending money on replacing parts that are still serviceable.

Thank you for taking the time to post for others. I had code P1494 showing on a 2001 Cherokee and with your help in this forum it was a very easy fix knowing where to look. Thanks again.

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee and same code came up after much trouble shooting found vacume line that runs under battery box that was cracked. this line runs your heater selector switch in the car and your cruise control. if cruise does not work and you can not keep you heat off of defrost than this is most likely your problem. you will need to pull your battery and battery tray to see vacume lines "" there are two under there. reason for line destruction that i can guess is battery acid.

I have a 2005 Jeep cherokee Laredo. i keep hearing a thumping noise on the driver side of my jeep. had tire removed and nothing was handing/loose where it would rub on tire (when in motion only) and make the noise i hear. AutoZone scanned and came up with a loose gas cap/filling up with truck idle. Does anyone have advice on this noise? i tried what the autozone guy said, use some gas treament, lucas is best. Light still on. Actually, the light used to go off when i put Mobil 87 in it. I continue using the same gas but, the light has returned (check engine) and my truck has almost 200k on the dash. It runs superb, no problems at all and i bought it used. Please help, i cant take another vehicle going on me. Just lost my chrysler concorde to engine lock up. If someone can send me a personal email it would be Fan Tas Tic!! jamiladavey1@yahoo.com

Thank you for posting. I have a 2001 Cherokee 4X4 and had the exact same problem as you. I found that one of the rubber boots had come off, but is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. Hopefully I will get better gas mileage now that the problem is corrected.

Thanks, I had been looking for the cause of this code for weeks on my 2001 Cherokee, found it instantly thanks to this post. Dealer had knocked off one of the vacuum line during last service. With 126K miles, the elbow should be replaced, but not dead yet.

Great advice had the same 1494 code. Traced the lines to the manifold and sure enough one had fallen off. Turned the 90 degree boot upside down and put it back on and it works. Thanks.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4.It runs fine but the check engine light comes on if I go above 65 mph and
when read the scanner says that I have an internal tranny problem. I have had the fluid and filter changed but the light still comes on. The vehicle runs fine but they cannot get the light to go off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
