You can tell when your speed sensor is going bad when your rpms do not match the speed that you are going, i.e. When you are going 55 mph, your rpms are in the 6000 range. Another sign is that your transmission may sound like it's having trouble going from 3rd to 4th. Hope you get it fixed.

I hear that it's near the oil dipstick and may need to remove the airbox to get to. I bought one 2 weeks ago and i'm going to try to replace mine 2001 sonata that the check engine lite has been on/off most of it's life! it kicks out of 4th (automatic) and won't shift unless I stop engine and restart. smells weird also 144,000 paint sucks, airbag lite on(1200$) said to repair but still going! lol

Yeah We have a 2000 Sonata with the V6 in the family. very common problem for us too. There are 2 speed sensors for the sonata. One for the transmission computer and a second sensor for the speedometer.

Can anyone know the cause for engine not staying on after replacing the input speed sensor on a hyundai sonata? I check everything after replacing the sensor, turn on the engine, but it turns off after running for about 10-20 seconds.

Hey everyone, I'm currently ALSO dealing with this problem and have learned a lot...and am willing to share!
If your speedometer is not working or "bouncing" back from 0 to your current speed, it is the "Vehicle Speed Sensor" right above the transmission (sticking out the top actually). In my area it's about $80.
If your car is jerking, not shifting back down to 1st (taking off VERY slow), and won't go more than 55mph then its one of your "Speed Sensors" either "Speed Sensor Output" or "Speed Sensor Input". In my case it's output and in my area it is about $90.
Hope this helped. Oh and to install them they charge another $100 but if you have simple hand eye coordination you can change both of these out by yourself in a matter of 20 minutes tops. Save $100, look it up online!:)

My wife has a '00 Sonata and she had this same problem it took me awhile to figure out, but its actually a very easy fix atleast for her car it was. I had to replace the engine coolant temp sensor which runs about 40 or 50 bucks for the sensor. The reason this was causing the car to stall and sputter was because it controls air / fuel mixture based on the engines temp. Once I fixed this never had the problem since.
