We purchased an 06 sonata V-6 w/20,000 miles. Four times within a month and with an additional 2,000 miles on it, we have noticed a very brief rattling, grinding,or severe pinging sound upon starting the engine. Very sporatic, 4 times with hundreds of start-ups. Almost sounds like engine is not getting oil pressure quick enough on these rare occasions. Noise only lasts for a few seconds.

Take it to a hyundai service dept. They know exactly what causes that. Mine did it upon start up when engine is cold. Easy to fix, and you are still under warranty.

Hans, Thanks for the reply. I spoke with my Hyundai service dept and they don't know what it could be as it never does it when I am there. Could you tell me what the problem was with your Sonata and I'll then talk to my service dept. Thanks

This sounds like the timing CHAIN tensioner. There is no timing belt on either V6 or I4 engines of this car. There is a technical service bulletin for this:

I have the same car, 6 cyl Sonata. The same noise started at 21,000 miles. I just dropped it off at the dealer and the service writer said he thought it was the timing chain tensioner. He said they would need to keep the car for 3-4 days. I asked if they would provide me with a rental car since the Sonata is under warranty....NOPE !!

UNFORTUNATELY, car owners can never expect dealers to have competent staffing.

We picked up a 2006 Sonata last year with 14,000. No problems except annoying wiper blade hop during test drive. Salesman agreed to have blades replaced.

Blade was still hopping after we picked the car up and I noticed they never changed the blades. Stopped by the next time I was in the area and the service manager acted like the salesman overstepped his authority by offering to have them replaced !!!

The SERVICE MANAGER eventually came out to the parking lot with 2 new blades and this IDIOT had trouble getting the blade he was working of off the friggen arm!!!. I had my side done before that idiot despite never having owned a Hyundai previously.

Then they pitched that LAUGHABLE service package for something like $270, which included "adjusting the brakes" although they are 4 wheel disc.

If all of that BS wasn't bad enough they told me they use a synthetic blend for oil changes, which I had reason to believe was so much BS. I called SIX different Hyundai dealers in a 50 mile radius and none of them used a synthetic blend.

I also own a 2006 Sonata, acquired used with 17,000 miles on it. There is no dealer for service in Kearney Ne. so I make 100+ mile trips for service. I've got a problem with a rattle in the right front of the car. Service relaced a sway bar connection, test drove and said the problem was corrected. I drove it three blocks and it was the same thing as when I took it in. In cold weather the darn thing squeeks and is just as annoying as the rattle. I've two different dealers look at it to no avail. I'm thinking of going to a local body shop. Any comments?

I had the same problem. Bought the 2006 Sonata V6 new and the rattle on start up began at about 25K miles. I've had it in to one dealer twice. They say they worked on the timing belt tensioner. They had it for a week one time. The problem was NOT fixed.

I have taken it to an different dealer twice, they claimed that they adjusted the timing belt tensioner, too. Same result, if anything the problem is worse. Sounds like a truck for the first few miles every morning.

I'm not a hapy camper.

I have a 2006 Sonata 6 cylinder and it has made the rattling noise since it was purchased used at 4,200 miles. It still makes the sam noise at 30k miles. Had it to the dealership in Greensburg, PA and they said there is nothing to worry about. I think after seeing other comments from others I will trade it in.

For what it is worth, I have an 04 Sonata V6 that at around 98K made a sound on start up like the eng. had no oil. I poured in around 7-8 oz of a product called Sea-foam, sound went any away in a matter less then a minute. When I spoke to a pal of mine who is a Mechanic he said it sounds like an oil passage in the head that was temporarly blocked. He said the sea-foam was good for this and then change oil again soon. Dealer was no help on this they just said these eng. were noisey like that. I now use the Sea-foam (7-8 oz)before each oil chg, and I put in 2 oz right after a new oil is in. I've gone to using full syn oil as will at 3K interval.

Also have a 2006 Sonata with 57000 miles.....dealer claims it is nothing to worry about and that Hyundai would not cover it....that it is a normal problem. Car ran out of warranty in January. Screwed?
