When you depress the brake pedal and push the start button the car will not start. Seems to be intermittent proble. Very frustrating. Anyone else having this issue? If so, what is the fix?

Do you own an iPhone. I find if I have the phone and key in the same pocket then this happens to me well. Remove the phone and it is fine.

his is something that Sonata owners who have push button start need to know in case of the brake switch malfunction.
What happens is when you go to start the car, it will not start and the screen on the dash tells you to press the brake pedal to start the engine. Naturally your instict is to press the pedal harder, this wont help.
Here is how you can start you car without pressing the brake pedal.
First take your foot off the brake pedal. Next push the start button one time. THen press and hold the start button again for roughly 10-20 seconds. The car will then start.
Important thing to remember is you WILL have brakes....but you WILL NOT have brake lights if the switch is malfunctioning.

I just had this problem this week. Twice my car didn't start when I pushed the brake and button. But it started on the 2nd try both times. Thought maybe I was rushing and not pushing them in sync or something.

But today I came out of an appointment and it wouldn't start at all. I called my dealership and he coached me through trying a few things including hitting the brake real hard a few times, but nothing helped. He said it was likely the brake sensor.(He seemed to assess that very quickly so I suspected there were other problems he'd seen before and I'm finding many complaints about this on-line.) He advised I call Roadside Assistance (towing is under warranty). They gave me a one hour ETA.

Meanwhile a friend came to meet me. So about 15 min before tow truck was supposed to come, I decided to show her what would happen when I tried to start it, and it started! It was 7pm by now and it didn't pay to go to the dealership b/c they couldn't give me a loaner until morning. So I'm taking it tomorrow. I'm praying it starts in the morning so I can drive it there and not call roadside assistance.

On the way home I called a friend with the same car to tell her to pay attention if she has trouble starting, and she told me that in June she was out of town on vacation and the same thing happened to her. It wouldn't start at all. She had to have it towed to a dealer and they replaced it. She had to take an extra day off work b/c she had to wait for her car to be repaired to drive back home. At least the work was all under warranty.

I wonder why it was never recalled for this problem? How many bad apples do they need to recall?

It is possible the battery on your remote is getting weak. Sometimes when you are having this problem, you can simply hold the remote up close to the start button and then push the button, then it will start. That may not be the problem, but I would try this first.

My shitnata oh I ment sonata does the same thing!!! I"m not sure its the brake switch or not), they have a funny fuse and electronic system for the car. If the fuse blows that runs the brake light's, the car won't start either!! It has happen to me every time I get in the car; 8 times out of 10. Also I can put a.battery charger on low charge on the battery and it starts every time!!! Tested the 1 year battery and is was good. So my conclusion is a computer or relay switch problem, who knows!!! HYNDAI NEEDS TO STEPUP HERE AND ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased my 2011 Sonata 27 months ago and my starter now needs to be replaced. The dealer and the car company refuse to take care of the problem.

Well, it looks like the problem has now migrated to the 2012 model.
I have 40,000 miles on my car and up til now have had no problems.
About two weeks ago the same thing happened to me at work. The car wouldn't start and I had it towed to the dealership. Off course the next day it starts right up for them and they ask me if I had the key with me when I tried to start it. DUH !!!. I told them the symptoms on the dash board the low tire pressure & trunk release lights were on, but nothing else. So anyway a few days later while
I'm driving those two lights come on again. I knew the car would not start so I took it right to the dealer and told them once they shut it off, it won't start. They said it would, so I said try it,and it wouldn't start. They tested the connections and wiring and everything seemed fine. They cleaned the battery terminals and when they tried to start it, it did start, so they said it was a bad connection and replaced the terminal. Well, next day at lunch, it wouldn't start again. This is actually the fifth time now. The car is back at the dealership, and I told them if it happens again, I'll be getting rid of it. They said they would be glad to sell me a new car. I told him, he would need to work for another car company, because it won't be from Hyundai.

2011 Sonata owner that's experienced this problem intermittently over the last 2 years.I've had the non-starting, then suddenly starting thing occur several times.
My hypothesis is that it's related to an electrical short that affects the stereo and the audio on the GPS system. The car's been assessed several times, and Hyundai wants to charge me to research the problem, the 100K mile warranty notwithstanding.
Outside of the much lower MPG than advertised, Hyundai's service organization is the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT of this car - otherwise, it's a winner.

My parents have a 2011 sonata. This has happened to them repeatedly since they bought the car. Every vacation on trip they go on the car leaves them stranded. It is in the shop now. Yesterday the dealer called and told them it was all set. They went to pick it up and it would not start. The dealer is now trying to charge for repairs because it has 70k miles on it.
I spoke with Hyundai today to let them know that the POS car is going to leave my 70 year old mother stranded some where unsafe. We have been lucky so far that they have always been stuck at their destination. I asked why they could not fix the car. They have thrown brake switche, brake light sensors, gear shift sensors and the actual start switch in this thing and nothing seems to work. They may have the best warrenty on paper, but that is only good if you can fix the problem with a competant mechanic.
I was told that the file had been sent to a regional manager and that I could not contact them. That is very dissapointing. i am awaiting a phonecall from the regional manager.
The service is junk, the road side assistance is only good for two tows a year, mom and dad are on their fourth for this issue. Dont buy one.

I've had the problem off and on, but, in the last 2 weeks, it has happened 3 times. The last time I tried to start the car for over 30 minutes. I called my mechanic and he had me press the button to get the battery on and then shift the car to neutral and then press the brake and push the start button and it turned on. My mechanic thinks it is the neutral safety switch. I'm taking the car to my mechanic to see if that is the problem.

If the problem is the neutral safety switch, does anyone know if it is a repair covered under warranty? My car is 3 years old and I have 35k miles and I am the original owner of the vehicle.

I have a 2011 sonata and I'm having a similar issue I just had the brake light switch fixed and I put a new starter in it because it was making a sound like the starter was not engaging just spinning, and now the new starter is doing the same thing? Does this sound like the issues everyone else is having?
