I have a 2005 Hyundai Sonata which gives me problems when I try to pump gas. The pump nozzle won't stay on - keeps clicking off and won't let the gas flow steadily into the tank. Never ever had this problem with another car. Can't figure if it's something I'm doing wrong or not. Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks,

If the current crop of cars still has the little vent hose that parallels the filler line coming from the gas tank to the filler cap is pinched, air can't escape from the tank as it fills with gas. You may want to have your dealer look to see if it is blocked somewhere. This will often cause the pump which pressure sensitive to backflow to cut off. It is a safety device built into the service station pump handle.

I also have a 2005 Hyundai Sonata that just started doing what you described. Did you find out what the problem was? How do you fix it?

I am a mechanic a a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer and I have seen a number of vehicles that have a spider that has made its happy little home in the vent. Removing the debris with compressed air is the best solution. If a compressor is not available, a can of pressurized gas may work if you have a long enough straw connected to it.

I just had this problem with my 2002 Sonata. The tank is not venting properly. The canister assembly, canister close valve and vent valve need to be replaced. It cost about $700 at the dealer.

i too had this problem (hope you havent paid $700) yet. the fuel vapor filter and close valve are screwed. they are located behind the driver's side rear wheel well, held to the under body with plastic box/holder and metal strap ('01 sonata sedan). disconnect 3 hoses leading to holder, leaving segement still attatched to box and marking which hose goes to which hose. drop the holder, fuel vapor filter (canister) assy. will come with it. unplug close valve from wires coming down through underbody. clean out any charcoal pellets from hoses still connected to gas tank. fuel vapor filter is attached to box via zip-strip - you can save this strip by sticking a small screwdriver in it. new canister and close valve are only avail. through dealer and will cost ~$211. disconnect 4 hoses from old canister, install on new one. remove old close valve from old canister - you need the little mount it's attached to - it snaps on to the canister. save the thick rubber bushing as well - it's not included with the new close valve. attached new close valve and old mount to new canister. use old zip tie for new canister and holder/box. plug new canister in to car, attach hoses, mount box. it may take a few fills for this to once again function properly, but i can now fill my tank at full speed again. hope this helps

I have a 2002 ford taurus sel-took to the shop (that has been doing all work for 4 yrs on my car) for engine light-they replaced vacuum assembly $180.00-3 days later went to fill up-would not take gas-kept shutting off, check engine light came back on, air went out and gas mileage was horrible. took back to shop-they then replaced maf sensor-$541.00 later engine light back on, still cannot pump gas, no air and mileage still horrible. Wants $800.00 to remove dash to see if it is the doors??Bear in mind has been on a diagnostic device twice-does this sound normal-could the first thing fixed(vacuum assembly) create all these problems. Sure seems so---HELP

I am so glad that you all have validated my claims. I sound like an idiot when I start the sentence, "I'm having problems pumping my gas...". Since this seems to be a popular problem with Hyundai vehicles, shouldn't they cover the repair? Anyone have any luck with that?
Hyundai Accent 2003, check engine light is on as well.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Tahoe. I just started a couple weeks ago. I can only put in a few cents at a time. Sometime air or even gas will spit back out of the filler neck after pulling the filler gun out. I did a quick check and there are no obvious kinks in the filler hose. Help!!! How does this get fixed??

I have this problem with my 2003 Dodge Neon. It only pumps 10-15 cent at a time and sometimes, gas will come back out. What do I need to do to get it fixed? And is it a long and costly process?

CHECK THE CANNISTER VENT VALVE BACK BY THE GAS TANK IT IS PROBABLY CLOSED AND SHOULD BE BE NORMALLY OPEN, WHEN THE HOSE IS DISCONNECTED YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BLOW INTO IT.
