cranking problems

I have a 1985 500 Honda Shadow, it cranks and runs good , I've had it on the road up to 80 mph, it does not cut out or skip, stop and it will idle until you turn it off, then thats when I have the cranking problem, it will turn over and after cranking on it for a while it will backfire and usually the battery will run down,if I leave it alone for a couple of hours or the following day ,it will crank right back up,I've checked the chokes on the carborators and they are working fine ,the spark does seem alittle weak but it is sparking. I've tried to check the timing but I'm not sure that I had the portable tachometer hooked right so I'm not sure the rpm's were corect but when I put the timing light on it it was on the mark. I don't know what to do next any comments or ideas would be appreaciated, Thanks ,Kevin
