hi, I have a 2001 Odyssey, we replaced the timing belt at the recommendation of dealer. We were charged for $1600, including labor cost of $900. Does this sound right? It seems too expensive.

Had our timing belt and other belts replaced in December at a Honda dealership for about $600. Don't let them sell you a new water pump while they are in there....unless it is leaking.

Thanks, Ron. They did change the water pump.

You did get ripped off. Timing belt replacement should be less than 1/2 of what you paid. Your best bet is to find a mechanic that works out of his garage to do it.

Also, Ron is incorrect. You should have your water pump replaced when you have your timing belt replaced. Its only a $40 part if you bring them the part. the odds are pretty good it will fail between timing belt changes so you might as well have it changed at the same time.

$1600 is ecessively high but if they replaced everything ( TB, hydraulic tensioner, tensioner assemble , idler, water pump, camshaft and crankshaft seals accessory belts ) they did you a favor if you plan on keeping the van until the next scheduled timing belt change (7 yra/105 K mi . Is it possible the did some other work for the 7 /105K mi maintenance interval too like adjusting the valves and replacing the spark plugs at the same time ?

You could have gotten a much better price at an independent Honda shop . People going to independent should require that only Honda brand parts be used for the certain jobs like the timing belt replacement.

I have a 2006 Odyssey just turned 100K. The reason for the timing belt expense when Honda changes it is due to almost a day of labor and while they have the engine apart for that, they include changing the water pump and anything else in the area. They also clean and lub any moving parts so they (You) don't have to go through all that labor again to replace a water pump for example. They shouldn't ahve to go back into the engine then for another 100K.

My Mom has a 2001 Odyssey w/ 72k miles. The dealership told her she needs to have the timing belt replaced for $800. I've been reading other posts and I'm not sure if she's being taken advantage of. The car is 10 years old but is under 100K miles. She will have a hard time affording the service so I want to know about time/age/wear on the belt and how to determine if this service is needed now. Thanks.

Time or mileage will determine the life of your belt. You don't want to have it break on the road. I'd say your mom's car is definitely due for it. You can certainly get it done much cheaper in a local shop. Make sure they check idlers and the water pump while they're in there. It's alot cheaper doing those things now, while they have it apart anyway.

I just had the timing belt replaced in my 2005 Odyssey at 107k miles. I got 3 different quotes from 3 Honda dealers. The first was $1250 but included oil change and spark plugs. The second was $950 but no oil change or spark plugs included. The third was $800 with the same parts included as the second quote so I went with that one. I was quite surprised at the differences in price between dealerships though so I would advise people, from my experience, to shop!

Wow, makes me feel good, just picked up my 06 Odyssey from the local Honda Dealership. Timing Belt, Tensioner, Water Pump, external drive belts and of course coolant. Out the door...$657.

It does pay to shop.....I have a local Honda mechanic that does oil changes etc....his price was higher than the dealer...which really surprised me.

I too live in the DC area (Southern MD)-the local Honda dealer quoted me an $825 price for timing belt maintenance (TB, water pump, drive belts, coolant)-if replacement of the tensioner is necessary add $130-seems like I may be able to save a few bucks somewhere else

That's sounds like the going rate. By the way, not sure about any other state, but in my state,NY, customer must authorize all work before it's performed. If not, you don't pay. In my case, I've used the same shop for years and I trust them. They know if they see something that needs doing, they'll either just do it or call me first if it's significant.

Honda in Marysville, Ohio is running a special right now:$599 for timing belt, water pump, replace coolant, and drive belts. If the tensioner needs replaced, it is an extra $130 or $140. We called all around central Ohio and this was the best deal we found so far. A local Honda dealership wanted $100+ more for the same work.
We don't have a "4" code yet but we are over 105,000 miles so we're leaning towards just getting it done to be safe and get the deal.

How do you know that your timing belt has been replaced or that all the parts they claimed replaced were replaced?
