Hi all. I have taken my 2005 Odyssey to two places, including the dealer I purchased it from, to have a noncooling air conditioner checked out. At each place, they tell me they can't find anything wrong. They then have recharged the unit, which cooled for about a day before the freon has completely leaked out.

Anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks for your help!

Today 4/28 I dropped my 05 Odyssey off at the dealer with the same problem. After they recharged the cooling system they discovered a tiny hole in the condenser coil. It could only be seen with a black light. Its just below the license plate right in the middle of the condensor. They claim its from a rock and IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. The repair will cost just under $1000. Thats right $1000 with just 9200 miles. The service manager did tell me to try Honda Customer Relations and try to get it covered under warranty.
The fight begins 4/29. Good Luck

The grill just below the license plate is a poor design. It offers no protection to the cooling system.
It should be bullet proof!

Same year same model. Dropped my van off this morning to have the Cooling system checked, service rep informed me of what would and wouldn't be covered under warranty he proceeded to tell us that in the event a Rock would kick up and say hit the condenser unit that would not be convered because it would be considered an outside influence. So wouldn't you know that they called me later that afternoon to tell me that the condensor unit was damaged by a rock! Anyway spoke to the Service manager and he advised that i call Honda Customer Relations and express my concerns. So, how many people will it take to start a Class Action suit

Same year same problem but now it has happened TWICE in a span of 18 months. Honda Dealer Service Manager suggested putting chicken wire down under car,he wouldn't do it, sounds like he knows of the problem. Spoke to Honda at 1-800-999-1009 and they claim I hit the lotto twice. Keep me informed

You should get a Mr. Grille. Its goes over the existing grille. It makes the van look sportier too.

I'm with the Class Action. I'll mention it when the Customer Relations "team" calls me back. My Odyssey is a 2006 and only has 5,900 miles on it and I got the "road damage" line for the hole in the condensor. They said they had to do a diagnostic on it that would cost $90, which runs dye through the system, which found the leak; the repair will cost $678, including a re-check. The dealer suggested I go through my insurance to get reimbursed - they are currently inspecting the vehicle to see if they will cover it or not (under collision if it is from a pothole or comprehensive if it is from debris kicked up from a tire - like I know which).

I told the the customer relations people at Honda.com that it was more like poor design, he stated it was one of those accidents that CAN happen. I told him in 25 years (plus/minus) of driving a car I had NEVER had it happen.

<sigh>

I just had the same problem that yall are talking about. I have had three Odyssey's with the prior design 2001-2003 and never had this problem. This is clearly a poor design with relation to protection of any kind for the A/C or cooling radiator also.

Maybe Honda can come up with the "chicken wire" fix that David in Conn. mentioned? What a joke that a small piece of glass went through the thing and on the hottest day we have had so far and 100 miles from home

Wow-I thought this was a total coincidence. I had a rock go through my condenser as wellon my 05 Odyssey. The dealer suggested that I try to get it covered under my insurance as well. Sounds like something they have rehearsed from what I have read. Our regular mechanic-who works mainly on Hondas-thinks this is a poor design that has been changed from previous models. The condenser is much thinner than it used to be. I guess that'll make it easier for rocks and other "outside influences" to damage it. We'll see what Honda says-we are stuck paying for now...

I have a 2005 Odyssey,My air conditioner stopped blowing out cold air this summer. I took it to a local shop who they performed a check on the system and it was found to be fully charged. I then took it to the Service shop at a local Honda Dealer (Heritage Honda in Baltimore Md.) They said I have a hole in the CA Condensor not covered because maybe a rock caused the hole It would cost at least $600.00. Wow how come the other shop found no leaks. This sounds like a way for local Honda shops to shaft the consumer. I quess I will be going Toyota next time..

I was just told the same thing. My wife was travelling out of state, cost $ 77 to be told the rock had put a hole in the condensor. Could not get the repair done before she left. Dealer in OH, same story, close to $ 900 to repair.

I have the same problem with my 2006 Odyssey touring. I took the vehicle to the dealer where i bought it. they said there is a hole in the condensor and it is not under wanranty. but they said they will not charge me this time because i m their loyal customer. but i need to wait for the part(s) to come since they dont have it in the store right now.
I should have bought this car. it is overrated.

Same problem on my 06 Touring. It is 2 weeks old and the air conditioner went out. I am 8 months pregnant with 2 other kids to tote around in the heat and so I told them they sure as hell better fix it. They said it was a rock that caused the hole - but amazingly agreed to fix it for free "just this once". I also know of another person who this happened to with her 05 model. There is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by Honda because I will certainly be happy to join any lawsuit on this issue if it happens again to my van.

I just had my 06 Odyssey in yesterday w/ surprise surprise the exact same problem. About 5000 miles on our Odyssey and AC went out Saturday. There is a barely visible hole in coils on front of Odyssey behind grill right near the lisence plate and I was told it is not covered under our extensive (we thought) warranty because considered damage from outside source. I mentioned that it sounded like poor design to me, my thinking being the same as some others that I have been driving a long time and never had this problem on any other vehicle. Was told by dealer to contact insurance company and looks like it may be covered by insurance but not sure what deductible will be. Dealer said at least $800 to repair. Needless to say, I am very disappointed and frustrated and will pursue with dealership. Am also having driver side power door fixed as it is making creaking noises.

Just had the same problem--2006 Odyssey, purchased 4/30/06, 5000 miles, A/C went out. Took it to the dealer, told it would cost $125 "just to look at it, because we see a lot of rocks damaging a/c's and it's not covered under warranty"! Lo-and-behold, it was a rock,$700 to repair. Called dealer owner--doesn't care. Called Honda, "we will note your complaint, but the warranty would not cover a design defect." However, did tell me if I wanted a recall investigation to file a complaint at www.NHTSA.gov , which I did. Please, if this happened to you, file a complaint! I think it is ridiculous that Honda is making consumers pay $500-$1000 to fix a broken air conditioner on a BRAND NEW CAR when it is clearly a design issue and there is a simple fix (protect the grill better). Given Honda's indifference I think this can only be corrected through outside pressure. Class action lawsuit, anyone??

Same issue. Just spent $830 replacing the condenser. Princeton Honda says its due to rock damage. Looks like a design issue. Called Honda Customer service. They say its not covered under warranty and asked me to call insurance.
