Just took my 2005 Odyssey in for water in the rear gate. Drains were plugged per the dealer. $136 for the work.

Whew! I had the same problem with my lift gate (2005 Odyssey). Because I simply don't trust dealers, I took it to an auto body/collision repair place. They sent smoke up into the door to find the leak. Both tail lights and another leak. They replaced the tail lights and the door gasket.$688!! I got advice on another thread on Topix. I wish I had seen this thread first.

I have a request: Those with this problem, can you please post the outcome here? Thanks.

I have the same problem with my 2006 Odyssey. The first time I brough it to Honda they told me it was the rear hatch window. I had the window checked and there was no problem with it.(I already knew that) I called them back and I will be taking it in again on Monday. The leaking is so bad that it is beginning to smell in the van and I have sloshing in the hatch. I will let everyone know what they say this time.

I have been dealing with this problem for at least THREE YEARS! They first told me it was the rear hatch gasket, fixed it, and then 6 months later the same problem - they "re-fixed the hatch gasket" (which wasn't covered...) and the taillights, too. 6 months later, same problem...and, I didn't realize that the water had leaked down into the rear cargo area seats. I was going camping, went to lift the seats, and the ENTIRE SEAT AREA was green with mold and fungus!! All of the leather ruined! Honda said it wasn't their fault, and simply cleaned the area - and the leather is still ruined. Now, a year later, the same problem - now they claim it's the taillights again AND the license plate seals. AND I'm now getting a leak in the front of my car - water runs down from my front mirror on to my radio! They tried to tell me it was the sunroof, but I duct taped the sunroof and the leak still happened. I've been told by someone that there may be plugs in the drainage hoses causing the backup. In addition, my side door has never worked correctly and the car keeps saying it's not closed (door open light). After getting the "door fixed" last week, I've spent half the night up tonight with the car alarm going off for no reason and the door light back on, saying it's not closing again....I'm talking to a lawyer now, because I don't feel it's fair I paid for the EX ($32K)and the entire car is rotting out from the inside because of the high humidity over the years from the constant leaks. What a shame.

Have an 05 odyssey. Back hatch is holding water. Any news about the recall?

2005 model - same problem, just called Honda and there is a recall so I booked the van in at which time they will diagnose the leak. They did not tell me what the recall is regarding.

06 Odyssey, water came pouring down on my husband yesterday. taking it to dealer on Tuesday. Bought the car 7/10, already had transmission fluid changed 9/10, whole engine replaced d/t crack that all the oil leaked out of and engine and radiator burned up 10/10, both heated seat elements replaced and driver window motor replaced 1/11; now trim on front windshield newly warped and leaking oil again but, "we don't know where it's coming from." Not loving my Odyssey.

I found this on another web site:
Just behind the passenger rear wheel (not in the wheel well), almost in alignment with the rear seat belt, is where the drain tube exits the vehicle. It gets plugged with mud and debris. Unplug it with a screwdriver, you will have no problem knowing when it is unstopped, just be prepared for quite a large amount of water. It appears to be a drain tube for the rear A/C unit. I have a 2005 and just now started with this problem, will try his fix this weekend.

I have a 2004 Odyssey and we have always had water in the cargo area, under the plastic well cover - never on top of the cover! We just completely dried the well with a shop vac and let it sit in the sun = completely dry. We drove it 5 miles down the road and back, then I happened to check under the cover in the well and it was wet again - no rain or anything!!! It has to be coming from the van itself. I called Honda and they said there is an evaporator back there for the rear AC. I'm taking it in to have it tested.

Maybe your car manufactures water!

I have 2007 honda odyssey and I have the same exact problem. When I raise the gate water flows out. I am going to change the gate light and see what happens.

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey and the tailgate fills up with water and leaks into the floor behind the 3rd row seats. So much so, that it was smelling really bad. Did anyone file complaints with Honda? Could not find any recalls reflecting this problem.

Hey, I'm in Maryville, with the same problem - Don't go to Airport Honda- they couldn't fix it for several years..you can email me at larizzo@charter.net and maybe we can file a complaint together. The water rotted out all my seats.

I commented almost one year ago about a nasty puddle of water that kept forming in my cargo area. My fix was quick and easy. I have not had water return since then. I hope that most people with water in their cargo areas can solve the problem by giving this a try. Here is my post from October 2010:

"Over the past week I had a puddle of water that kept getting bigger and bigger in the cargo area even though I kept cleaning the water out. It wasn't even raining and the water kept coming back. I noticed a puddle on the pavement behind my passenger side rear wheel and laid under the car to see where the leak was coming from. I got a few drips in my eye from a rubber plug above. I took a phillips screwdriver and started to pry the rubber plug loose, when the screwdriver slipped into a hole in the center of plug. Water (lots of water) came gushing out!(I didn't even see the hole in the plug at first because of dirt clogging it.) Now, a day later, my cargo area is dry! That was a quick fix!"

***Note: When you stick a screwdriver into that plug, be sure you are not directly under it! You will get drenched!

I have the SAME issue. 2006 Odyssey. I brought it to Honda and they replaced one of the tail lights, but it's happening again. I can't believe they haven't discovered that this is a huge issue, yet?

What have you done to get the water out and correct the problem? My van has water sloshing in rear door and I don't know what to do.
Our 2010 Odyssey has had both rear tail light replaced twice because they fill with water when it rains. Then when you lift the tailgate it rains on your head. Tbut if you look at the light units you can see they are half full of water. Not sure how this happens because there are only four parts to the light units: a bulb, a bulb holder, a gasket for the bulbholder and the light assembly.

If the water is inside the light assembly, I would remove the tailight and with the bulb still in place, turn it in all directions and see if water leaks out. That might be where it's getting in.
