Have a 2004 crv with 38,000 miles. AC stopped blowing cold air. Called dealership. Had to pay 130 dollars to tell me the compressor needed replacing. I called Honda got a case number and they agreed to pay all but 207 dollars. Now I am afraid from what I have read on here that the same thing is going to happen again and worry they want pay next time. Hate to get rid of it as we have towing package on the front and would have to have all that removed and installed on another vehicle.

I had a 2004 CRV with the same problem, a friend at work a 2003 CRV also same problem. 2 CRV's on same parking lot!!! of 200 empoloyes!!! it's common.... it widespread. i talked to the mechanic and he says there is a solution but requires some preventive work, simply replace all gas of the AC once a year and replace a filter in the condenser, this filter apparently gets clogged and pressure rises, thus damaging the compressor, I own another CRV, and I will definitely this.... hope this helps |

We had the same problem. 2004 65000 miles and the ac compressor froze. Honda helped and paid half the repair. What is needed to start a recall?

Same issue here in the Twin Cities. We checked with other repair shops and got much lower quotes than the initial $1700 the dealer quoted. After we told the dealer not to replace the compressor, they called back with a long story about Honda "paying half" and reduced the installed cost to $750.(Still a lot of money!)
As an aside, anyone else weary of large "scheduled maintenance" costs? I'm moving to non-dealer affiliated repair shops. |

I have a 2004 Honda CRV and the air compressor went out today. I am going to contact Honda corporate with a request for the goodwill warranty. I am printing off 266 complaints from this site, complaining about the a/c system.
Thanks for the info. Will let you know if I have any luck. |

So update to my case called twice and finally got a case # they didnt want to give case number at first or offer any assistance but I kept pushing the issue so they gave me a case # and told me that I had to have the car diagnosed by a honda dealer and that a case manager would contact me. Took it to my local honda dealer arrowhwead honda and they confirmed that ac compressed had seized and recomended replacing AC compressor, clutch, field coil, condensor and reciver drier with a quote of $1440.48 asked about hoses etc being replaced because of metal fragments and was told that there was not metal fragments so the parts listed were all that neede to be replaced. So my case manager contacted me yesterday and told me Honda would pay for the parts but I would be responsible for the labor at a discounted warranty rate. So I felt ok about that considering the vehicle has 99162 miles and was not bought brand new from Honda. So here is where the nonsense starts called the dealership to see how much labor was going to be and was told I would be called right back with a quote, waited all day no call so finally today at 3pm I got ahold of the service advior and he tells me labor is going to be around $1200.00 !!!! I was shocked I asked "how can the labor be $1200.00 when I was quoted $1440.83 to fix it parts and labor included when now honda was paying for the parts and offering a discounted labor rate?" He told me I was never quoted that price but I have a printout in black and white showing that exact price of $1440.83. He also responded your getting a heck of a deal with Honda paying for the parts! Also I am being thrown aside by the dealer and feel like a low priority and its 112+ degrees latley and the vehicle is unbearable to drive. This is bull crap! My question for all of you that have honda pay for the parts is how much did it cost you in labor to repair just the ac compressor, condensor, clutch and reciver dryer? I think this dealer is trying to take advantage of me. Can anyone please help and post how much they have paid out of pocket for just the labor and what was replaced? Thank you all very much And thank you Joyce for your help also. I really think we should all get toghether and file a class action lawsuit. |
|
Update Dealer just called said it will be $520.00 for labor. I hope they dont try to pull the we need to replace the complete system instead and charge me for the labor on that also. So one more question what was the labor charge to you all that had the complete syatem replaced? Thanks again everyone. |

I wrote in before. Honda paid for my $1,400.00 job and only charged me $100 because I told them I did not intend to pay for the repair. I am now trying to get my $100 back. I'm not paying one red cent for their incompetency and you shouldn't either. If I get my $100 back I'll let you know. You shouldn't pay ANYTHING for this. They asked for me to fax my receipt and proof of labor repair, which I did. They never got it so I'm faxing it again (rep was out of town, so it may have gotten lost on their end at American Honda). I will surely let you know if I got my money back.
Don't be happy that you SAVED money--be happy that it didn't cost you ONE PENNY. I don't know how class action suits work, but count me in if you run one. maria@mariasebastian.com |

My compressor went out this week on my 2004 CRV, with 70,0000 miles on it. I called my dealer to schedule a time to take it in and check. I told him I read all these and other web sites postings on the compressor. He mentioned that I did my homework. He called back today and confirmed the compressor was shot, and it would cost $ 1,400.00 to replace. He told me he called his DM, and that the dealership would pick up 60 % and I would be responsible for the rest. Should I go any furthur, with Honda corporate. My feeling is the dealer do all they could for me. I have purchased three cars from them in the past 10 years, and all service through them as well. LET ME KNOW ??

People on the CR/V forum at Edmunds.com have posted a link to the 'Office of Defects Investigation' division of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of course, Honda will argue that this is not a 'safety issue'. I can think of a number of situations that one could argue. Say...just HOW MANY of these forums containing CR/V complaints are out there, anyway? |

Here's the link from the Edmunds forum, if anyone is interested...
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm I really don't think Honda wants to go to the expense of a recall. |

I'm glad I found these posts. I have a 2004 CRV with only 37,000 miles (bought new). Two days ago it made a grinding noise when I turned the a/c on but it was still blowing cold air. I took it to the dealership and they said it was the a/c air compressor and gave me a quote of $1990.00. Luckily, I still had my extended warranty, and honda will cover that cost....this time. Does anyone know if the replacement compressors are under their own warranty? I'm worried after reading all of these posts.....should I just get rid of it now before it costs me again and again?

well my case is still in progress.
One dealership quoted me $3500 to replace the whole system . another dealership $1800 for the same job. go figure.... honda wanted to pay only 465 and im still workign myw ay up. |
|
|
typo
that was 65% as opposed to 465 |
|
|
ok the two dealerships im talking to
one mentioned if compressor is out - it contaminates everything and the WHOLE system has to be replaced. but he did not check if the condenser, evaporator , dryyer and expansion valve was also harmed coz they could not od any testing . the other dealership said they dont know of anything replacign the whole system . they see whats wrong and they replace it if it is bad . so two dealerships - two different approach. |

Hi....it is a safety issue. When I took my CRV in the Honda mechanic told me I had to fix it becasue when the compressors explode little metal pieces break off and could cause your engine to seize. HHHMMMM...Traveling down the freeway at higher speeeds with young kids in the back....engine seizes....I think that is a saety issue!

My 2004 Honda CRV needs a full AC system replacement and the dealership told me it could be up to $3000. Now I see this is not an uncommon problem...YIPPEE. I did call American Honda after reading some of these comments and got a case number. My service guy wasn't pleased with this revelation (although he's very polite-hey, he didn't make the car) and said he'd be in touch. There's no way I'm planning to be on the hook for this after the minimum of research I've done on these problems with '01-'04 CRV air conditioning systems.
Anybody know of any service bulletins from American Honda to the dealers on this problem? |

My sister has 2004 crv. just had air go out AGAIN she put $1250 in it almost exactly 1 year ago. the dealer wanted over $3000... it suddenly starts blowing hot air but is fully charged. had checked at 2 places so far, told her 2 different things. best estimate so far $1200. taking to a dealership has been out of the question. one mechanic says is a $93 part he figures.. but is listed as a day and a half labor to replace the valve he thinks it is and says has seen go out in these vehicles.
I figured would help her out and check the net for issues to see what the hell the deal was with these things. appears to be common problem from the looks of the board. I really liked her car.. but if this is the norm, there in no way would buy a piece of **** that has a major flaw like that the manufacturer won't stand behind. |
