Okay, I was wondering if anyone knows about this.
I have a 2002 CRV with 35,000 miles. I was going to take my dog for a walk today and we stopped off at the local drive thru coffee stand. The car started just fine, fuel gauge said it was over half full, and there were no warning light. I shut my engine off while I ordered and waited for my coffee. This took maybe 5 minutes or so. I start the car up again and it was sluggish starting. I look at the gauges and the fual gauge needle was at empty and the little fuel warning light was on. I decide to play it safe and go across the street to fill up. I get about 5 gallons in when the pump shut off. I get back in and the gauge and warning light are still on empty. Only this time it started better. i called my dealership to make an appointment for next week. I was wondering if anyone know what might be going on? How serious is this?

Was it a hot day? Could be a vapour lock in your fuel line or pick up in your tank.

This happened to me today! I have a 2002 CRV with about 55,000 miles on it. My tank was close to empty, I filled it with over 12 gallons and when I turned it on it still said empty. Just in case there was a problem with the pump, I drove it to another gas station and attempted to fill it. It was full. As I drove, the gauge eventually read half full, but still not correct. Did you ever find a solution to this? It is a very hot day, perhaps it is the Aug. 10 suggestion

Same thing happened with my 2002 CRV. About 6 weeks later, the battery died. Replaced the battery and the gas gauge has worked perfectly since.

NEWER CARS WILL NOT VAPOR LOCK THERE IS A VALVE THAT RELEASES PRESURE BACK INTO THE TANK SO IT IS VERY HARD TO VAPOR LOCK

same problem on a 2002 CRV. Dealer is replacing fuel pump to fix the problem.

The problem fixed itself. I hypothesized that the float in the tank might be stuck from me running the car near empty for a couple weeks... so, I took it on a bumpy road and did my best to "loosen it up". It only took one good bump for the gauge to come back to life.

please tell me the result. My mechanic replaced the fuel pump and that did not resolve. We are at a loss to explain. Could the 02 sensor have any bearing??

Same thing happened with my fiancee 2005 CR-V (20k miles); the fuel gauge is reading empty at all time and empty sign light is always on. my electrician checked the fuel pump and said its fine and the problem was with the fuel gauge itself. I didnt believe him so we took it to the dealer to check the source of the problem...plus maintenance of the car, one week later and $1000 bill (maintenance very expensive over here)they said fuel pump is fine the problem is with the fuel gauge indicator, they do not have spares in stock so they need to order from overseas. I am now in the UK on holiday and will try looking for the fuel gauge panel or indicator to replace.
If someone has better solution please help.

2002 CR-V - 85,000.
Fuel tank gauge is all over the map - sometimes full, middle or empty, regardless of how much gas is in the tank....have to keep track of mileage to work out if I need to refill....does anyone know if the fuel warning light will come on when close to empty,(is the warning light tied in to the sensor in the tank) or is that automatically not working also if the gauge is on empty...

thanks

I had a similar problem, driving along gas gauge says I have half a tank of gas. The car stalled and would not restart. I took the car to my mechanic who went crazy trying to find the problem. He finally found that the gauge was not working properly and I was toally out of gas

Mine went bad about 3 years ago on my honda 2002 crv ! At the time car only had 31,000. miles on it ! Still havent repaired it and have ran out of gas TWICE ! Although big issue just wait unitl your AC goes out and you discovered it has happened to hundreds of thousand upon thousands of people !!! Honda WILL NOT RECALL IT ! I only had 36, 300 ( 300 miles over warranty ) and they WILL NOT HELP ! They said it would cost around 3,000 dollars to repair ! so i drove without air for three years and then the clutch on the ac unit dropped off and sounded like car was gonna explode ! had to have it fixed found a place that did it for 600.00 Honda still wanted 3 grand and my car still only has 41,000 miles !!!

Although the AC is a problem, not sure it's "hundreds of thousand upon thousands of people".
Instead of constantly worrying about running out of gas, why not just get it fixed? Probably fuel pump/sender unit in the tank.

My 2008 CR-V is doing the very same thing. This am with almost a full tank of gas, the gauge showed on empty and the warning light was blinking- not solid light like it usually is when the tank is getting low. I restarted a few times in hopes it would go back to normal but no luck. I called the dealer and they said they never came across that problem before and now I see a few other people have it. So has anyone had it successfully repaired??

Unless your car is under warranty, I'd steer clear of the dealer. Find a local shop that knows how to trouble shoot fuel gauge problems. It's really not that hard. Obviously it's beyond the dealer, if he never heard of such a thing!
