Hello I have a 2000 Honda CRV with 58,000 miles on it. Recently I was headed down a rural hill after a semi steep incline. On the way down when I released my foot off of the gas peddle I heard a rattling in the engine. It's not always there, but I popped the hood and at a certain RPM I can hear it in the drivers side of the valve cover. It is almost a rattling like a marble sound (bearing?) I'm not sure if it is a noisy valve or not? Has anyone else had this issue? Oil has been changed every 3000 miles. I'm probably going to go ahead and take it into Honda, but would like to hear anyone elses feedback first. I would take it too a small import shop, but we don't have any good ones in Maui. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Since the car is a 2000 it could be the problem with the valves sinking into the cylinder head causing the valves to become loose. but not sure?

Hi i just found this site as my 98 Hyundai Excel twin cam is making the exact same noise when i rev it low on the drivers side its a funny sound and has no rhythm to the engine its sounds like little marbles i took mine to Hyundai today and they said it was the cams and it was a factory fault but will not harm the engine.
Tell me how you went or if any one else has this sound.

Yes, I have a rattling sound and I took it to a hyundai dealer and got it checked out and they said it was ok and nothing wrong. They said I was using cheap gas and cheap filters. So I started using 89 gas and filters from the dealer. It still rattles but I'll just see what happens now.

I have recently discovered a rattling coming from under the hood. It rattles when I am idling and when I press the gas is continues for a second and then stops.

Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

I have a honda DOHC VTEC Engine that makes a low rattle noise from valves at idle.
Rattle gets louder as I give quick rev and immediately goes away as the rpm climbs.

I found that my spark plug cables were grounding out to each other and other metal parts.
(have not bought new cables but did re-arrange nicley and has then ran a bit more quiet, but still makes the noise)

I Also cleaned distributor cap, I Still suspect there is a fault in the distributor itself.
Or maybe bad air/fuel mixture.

I beleive that certain valves in certain cylinders need to be adjusted to a custom measurement.

High RPM import engines are great tuners.
(Tuning all has to do with rotation, balance, timing, measurments and more. Its almost out of this world)

Dealership said its normal because nothing is perfect. There is still many flaws to all engines ,or else there would be no needed tune ups or breaking parts.

This issue really bothers me, because I enjoy working and mostly beating on my lil Japanese engine, and know that someday it will break.

If you really want to fix this issue, look for your local Import enthusiast tuner and hope they have someone there who can help get-er-done.

If valve adjustments just wont work, Most likely you have spun a rod bearing.(bearing between cylinder rod and cranckshaft)

The bottom end needs work.

I judt had my honda serviced with the same noise. initially the honda tech's changed the distributor and re-adjusted the valves..noise has still present. it ended up being the timing rubbing againt the cover. the fix, honda tech tighened to belt and torched the cover a bit to allow movement.

Catylac converter (cat-back) may be clogged.(This can also cause excesive valve noise)

try tapping the catback with a rubber malet ot palm of your hand, try hearing for a rattle sound.
(catback can still be clogged even when no noise heard)

I cleaned mine out (had peices of last engine that was blown) Now my valve noise went down at least 50%

I have the same rattle coming from inside the top of the engine block so I removed it and had a look, it seems the timing chain for the cams has stretched maybe due to heat and wear? now at low revs it knocks on the cover of the engine block. I'm gonna buy a new chain and replace it see if it works.

Well, I suppose you could go back to the place that did your oil change and ask them to take a look.

How about timing belt idler? AC compressor? A good mechanic should be able to pinpoint a noise using a stethoscope, long screwdriver or a length of heater hose.

I have a 99 Ford Windstar with a 3.8l v6. 140000 miles I change the oil every 3000 miles. When i give it gas to accelerate it will sometimes rattle really loud. When I am climbing steep hills it will rattle. What could this be?

Engine pinging? Try a tank of 91 gas, see what happens.
