I have a 99 CRV, and I think the timing belt went last night, engine is dead. any idea what its gonna cost me to fix? I have no idea what to do now, I usually do my own maintenance, but am away from my tools and workspace. i've never tackled a job as big as this too.

Am I going to be able to just replace the belt? or should i just shoot it and start looking for something else?

Well first you'll have to determine if it IS the belt. Honda has a mileage recommendation for timing belt replacement. Not sure what yours is, but it's generally around 105 to 130K miles. Yours ever been changed? Some cars have "interference" engines. Don't know if yours is, but if so, could be much more serious. This isn't an easy job, if you've never done it before, especially if you depend on it to get you to work every day. A shop would probably charge in the neighborhood of 4-500 bucks.

I've got it at a shop now. No, I had never had the belt changed, and the car has about 140K on it. I'm not sure if it had it done before, but i doubt it.

I'm waiting to hear back from the mechanic just how bad it is. the starter turns and everything else works. I've been told this is a good sign that the engine isn't destroyed.

I have A PROBLEM WITH MY engine, on a 1997 honda accord lx 4 cylinder, bad skip on the #3 cylinder and it's not plug, wires or distributo. he said he would have to go into the engine and do a valve job or head job to get the skip out and would cost approximately 15oo dollar is this a fair price?

Normally you would do a compression test and/or a cylinder leak down test to determine exactly what's wrong with the engine before you tear it down.

Unfortunately Monica, no one can diagnose your problem over the internet. I would take it back to the place that put the spark plugs in, if the problem started soon after that.

I own a 99 CRV and was just informed that I seem to have the same problem many CRV owners have - I need a new Cylinder head and gasket kit as per the Honda service bulletin 03-038. I have read most of the past 227 posts and see that I am not alone. Does anybody have any advice on what is the cheapest and most effective way to resolve this issue?

A Honda dealer is going to be the most expensive, so I'd try a local shop that someone can recommend to you. Maybe get two estimates.

I have a 99 CR-V & went to the local mechanic to replace the timing belt & the water pump. Just before collecting my vehicle, I received a call & was told the mechanic accidentally damaged one of the valves as a piece of tissue went into the gasket! I was obviously taken by shock as well as being angry. I have been told that the head needs replacing. Nevertheless the mechanic has accepted liability.. Can someone advise me whether replacing the head gasket is a good thing?? Does this become prone to over heating or has any compression problems?

I have a 2000 honda crv. I have the same problem told it needed a valve adjustment. I got the adjustment and worked fine for about three months but it started doing the same thing it has 135k miles. I dont know if i should try doing anything else to it or just sell it. Im thinkig of changing the head gasket and see if that will help, but i dont if its too expensive im will just drive it like that till it dies completely. any suggestions? did anyone have any luck with this?

Hi I have a 99 Crv with 307,000 kms on it. I bought it with 255,000 kms 2 yrs ago, it was burning oil when I bought it. After a few weeks I put 'No Leak' treatment into the oil and the oil burning greatly reduced. I treat the Crv poorly, have ran it lots with oil not registering on dip stick. Recently (last 2 months) started running rough, so I added Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Still ran rough. I had the oil changed (ran it for 6 months + without changing oil - about 25,000kms, just kept adding oil) and added Lucas Oil Stabilizer again. No change (running rough in my terms - burning oil at a 1 liter+ per fill up, sputtering, hesitating and misfiring as well as a huge reduction in fuel economy from 500 km a tank to 300 km).
I realized something today, when I first got it I added No Leak and my issues almost went away. So today I purchased some and added, 90 kms on this tank and I'm starting to notice improvement. The No Leak is designed to swell the valve seals, which seams to be my issue.
I checked my CELs just before I added- P0300,P0301,P0302, P0303, P0304, P1399, P0141. this means pistons 1 thru 4 missed fired (P0301-4)(P0300 - random misfire)(P1399 -random/multiple misfire) and O2 sensor heat sensor faulty (P0141) because I don't have a Cataylic converter anymore.
After 90 MMS just P0141 - the O2 sensor.
Maybe someone else can give it s shot. Im just gonna run it into the ground.
I have replaced the spark plugs recently but didn't do a thing.

If you want to see if you seals are leaking (not 100% accurate) when driving down hill at highway speeds, let of gas in gear (I have a standard) for about 10-15 secs and get on the gas again and look back for blue smoke, this generally means the engine has sucked oil past seals and into cylinders and getting on gas blows it out tail pipe.
BTW my previous post I forgot to add enviromental factors - it was about 0 to -10 degrees Celsius when it started about 2 months ago, went through about 2 weeks or so of -30 degrees Celsius and just getting back to about -15.

It seems to me Honda would have told the consumer about the issue about having the valves adjusted sometime ago, but not doing so would take the responsibility of doing the right thing for the consumer. We purchased 4 Honda in the past...but will not purchase another. Have been greatly satisfied with our Toyota Prius, Frontier Truck, Santa Fe. No longer a Honda satisfied customer and would not purchase another.
Both sons are also no longer Honda drivers. Honda.....Its doing the right thing...good luck

my friend you're living in a pipe dream world. I've had my Honda to the dealer multiple times on comebacks at two different dealers once I find an independent like I had back in Paoli Pennsylvania I will stick with him because the guys and dealerships are like mushrooms fed a bunch of crap and kept in the dark...

My dad is having some issues with the cylinder heads on his truck engine. He is trying to figure out the problem but is stuck. I thought I would help him figure some of this stuff out, but it's a lot harder than I thought. Does anyone have any insights that can help a beginner? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
