I have a 2002 CR-V and I am the original owner. It only has about 90,000 miles on it. I have had EVERY oil change and recommended service done at the Honda dealership. In the fall, two oxygen sensors had to be replaced at about $600. I also did a top engine clean, trans flush/fill, radiator flush/fill, brakes, everything...for about $1000. I loved my truck. Two weeks ago it about threw my daughter and I through the windshield at about 40 mph, and then it felt like the engine fell out. It did it once again before we got home. It was taken to the dealership and for $4660.28 they say new transmission, catalytic converter and serpentine belt are needed. I could cry...and I am NOT at all happy with Honda vehicles. A private shop had to drive it about 10 times to find the same "slam on breaks" effect and now they say they've NEVER seen this happen before...

I had the same problem on my 99 CRV. It wound-up being a loose connector on the linear solenoid. The connector had a broken latch, so it wasn't tight. When it didn't make good contact, it would trigger fail-safe mode, which prevents upshifts. When you cycle the ignition switch, it resets the computer until it happens again. I used a wire tie around the connector body to hold it tight, and haven't had the problem since.

I have a 2000 CRV that will not shift until it reaches 3800 rpm's when I am going up a hill or a grade. Even if I am barely accelerating up the hill or grade or I let mt foot off of the pedal it still won't shift until 3800 rpm's. It drives me crazy. Tranny fluid changed periodically by dealer. Is it that the 4cyl is weak or does it have tranny problems.

RE # 18 comment from Neilson in Fort Laud FL... I have a 2000 honda crv-lx 5 speed with 178,000 miles on it. I have a bad exhaust valve on the 1st cylinder. My choice is to replace the head OR replace the engine. I guess i could try to sell it or trade it but who would want it???? LOL. I've been pricing repair costs. New head $1500-$1800 0r used endine $2600 or reman engine $6,000-$8,000. I still owe $3000. I'm SO disappointed in Honda. I thought these cars were unbeatable and my gas milage is about 22-25/ mpg. HELP!!!!!!

I have a 2001 CRV manual transmission and am the original owner. About one month back, I could not shift to any gear position after starting the engine. With the engine shut off I was able to shift gears without any problem. So I shut off the engine, shifted to first gear and then was able to get going. While moving, I was able to shift to second gear with some difficulty. I was slightly easier to shift to higher geats though not as smooth as before. I managed to take it to the dealership and they said my master/slave hydraulic pump for the gears was worn out. They charged me $525 for fixing it and I also got a 75000 service done for additional $325. The car worked fine for a month and today I had the same problem show up again. I had driven about 10 miles and wanted to shift to a lower gear but the stick was just stuck in neutral. I faced the exact same problem as last month. When the engine was running I could not shift into any gear. I had to turn off the engine, shift to first gear and restart the engine. This time it was worse because it was almost impossible to shift while the car was moving. If I took it to neutral it was very hard to shift to another position. And whenever I tried to slow down and bring it to first gear at any traffic light, the car started to stall and shut off. I am going to take it back to the dealer tomorrow and I will need a tow truck this time. I have not had any problems with my CRV up until now and am very upset that it is behaving like this at only 75000 miles. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions on what the problem could be. Thanks.
This hasn't happened to my 2000 crv but it did happen to my 1993 Jeep cherokee sport. I needed a new clutch plate. I think it cost about $1200. I had a really BAD mechanic so it cost me much, much, much more. It sounds like a bent clutch plate - that was my problem, the teeth were bent. i saved the part for a long time, just threw it out last week.
Hope that helps.

I have a 2001 Honda CRV with 70,000. Its an automatic and when driving up a slight incline, it seems like it takes forever to go from first to second gear. The tach reading is almost always 4 or 4+. This sounds like it may be related to, or the beginning of everyone elses problem with the transmission. Any help appreciated.

I am a previous owner of Honda Civic and at milages past 100k, it seems that tranny is also not durable. I brought it to AAMCO for 1200. My CRV seems to start behaving like one too. Nowadays it takes time to upshift on a slight road upward incline. I will take it a tranny shop. They will do the same. Sometimes your previous mechanics have influence on your car. Watch out for it too. They are just discouraging you to buy American. True! I doubted the work done by David, a mechanic from Riverside, CA when I was there. I already had the valve adjusted from him and 30,000 miles later I have to get a new cylinder head. Breaks my heart. It can be Honda quality too. Who knows

We have a 2002 CR-V. We bought it used and it has approx. 82,000 mi on it now. Last evening we turned a corner to come home, heard a clunk (thought it was a pot-hole) and the service engine light came on and the green D indicator light (the one for Drive) began flashing. We got home, stopped for the garage door to go up and the vehicle would not move! Is our transmission toast? Please help!
Today - 8/11/08 - What ever happened to your crv?
My 2002 just stopped on the street yesterday 8/10/08 and now only works in 1st. No reverse, drive or second, but it moves forward in neutral!

I also have a 98 CR-V (Automatic) with 97,000 miles. Sounds like I have a similar problem of hard and delayed shifting both upshifting and downshifting. My mechanic says I will need a new transmission.
