I have a similar problem. When the car is cold it shifts through all the gears fine. When it has been driven for about 5 miles and heats up it begins to slip in 3rd and 4th gear - still ok in first and second gear. Any ideas?
I had the same problem (at about 5 miles would start slipping when it was at 2,000 rpm range), Honda said I needed a new transmission ($3,800). Took it to a very reputable transmission shop who told me I just needed a tune up. He sent me to a local mechanic - New Plugs fixed the problem.

I have doubts that changing the AT fluid is a good idea. Some mechanics tell me to never change the AT fluid as it cannot be completely changed, that only a few quarts will drain and the process must be repeated over several days. A local Goodyear shop claims they can remove all the old fluid and replace with Honda AT fluid. Back-flushig apparently is their method and the Honda mechanics claim this may fill the filter with debris and stop the AT from working properly necessitating a full rebuild. I had one 2002 Accord AT at 85K miles rebuilt for $1600 vs the dealer's offer of $4500 for a factory rebuilt AT. Is there a better way to maintain the AT? My other 2002 Accord has 50K miles and has not had an AT fluid change.

I have a 2003 Honda CRV and my family was coming back from VA and going back home to Cleveland OH.(2 wks before we had it service for an air flow sensor)It's very hilly around the border of Pa, MD and VA but we have never had a problem with going up and down hills. Our car started to shimmy and the car got out of gear and went to neutral. the engine light went on and that was it... We get it towed to the nearest honda service center 40 mile away from our destination, and they were closed so we had to stay over at a motel because we had our dog with us. Anyway, they found two error on the diagnostics test 9028 and 9029 which were transmission errors. Instead of staying in Hagarstown Md threw the July 4th week, because the service center said it could take a long time for everything to figure out the problem, he reset the computer on the CRV and we hoped and prayed all the way home. We take it to our Honda service "Sunny Side Honda, Middleburgh, Ohio" and they can't find anything wrong. We showed them the printout of the errors from the Hagarstown service center but that's not helping us. What we got is that the fluid in the transmission shifted and the sensor didn't know where it was and shut off... That isn't an acceptable reason for me.... I'm very disappointed that I bought a Honda. The first 3 years wasn't bad but then right after the 3 years were up, rotaries went bad $500, air flow sensor went bad, Rear differential fluid need filled(which should have been filled when they fixed the back brakes either the first or second time), and now this. I thought I bought a reliable car.... NOT.....

Two weeks ago, we did complete tune up for CR-V by which I mean, engine flush, coolant flush, spark plugs, transmission flush(replaced with genuine Honda graded trans oil), waterpump, surpentine belt and few other things here and here. Today as soon as I got of the highway, my engine light came on and right then i could feel that it was sort of shifting at very high point. Needless to say i somehow managed to take it to mechanic and he said the the shifting plate(plate that enables gear changes) is burned out. Basically need a new transmission. Couple of weeks ago i just dumped almost 600 dollars and jeez i don't know how much this is going to cost. I suggest we should all write a letter to Honda stating our problem and suggest a recall on them. Seriously, this is something many of us are going through and somethings has to be done. I don't think i will ever look up at Honda again :(.. I luv my nissan Maxima.. has more over 350 on original engine and transmission and clutch was changed at 230. Still runs like a champ.. I should stop my rant now..

IF FLUSHED THE TRANSMISSION YOU DID MORE DAMAGE THEN GOOD HONDA DOES NOT REC TO FLUSH A TRANSMISSION AND IF YOU DID NOT CHANGE YOUR TRANS FLUID OFFEN AND THEN FLUSHED IT THE MECHANIC THAT DID THE WORK DID THE HARM TO THE TRANSMISSION

Some non-technical people would use the word "Flush" to mean drain old things out and shove in a new one like those "flushings" you see everyday or two. Nobody in a shop would waste their time using a flushing solution exept an avid novice owner do-it-yourself guys.

What do you KNOW isnt much, but can you elaborate some more if you KNOW?!

I have a 1999 crv, 120k miles and it just started some 3 weeks ago to "sometimes" not shifting to 3rd or 4th(overdrive) when going a bit uphill. But it returns back to normal shifting after a few trials of decelerating/acelerating it on the road. Thanks for posting the pblm btw all of us here. I hope Honda isnt just concerned with Sales but also its true quality. Is there someway we could reach the people concerned at Honda? I looked at the magazines before I bought this used car at 70,000 miles. The magazine gave good ratings exept for noisy engine. I guess we cant trust much the magazine writers. Is there any magazine that tells the truth, because writers need to boost their careers too. Where do we go to realy alert Honda and get some refunds? I had my Cylinder head replaced, and now my Tranny!!!!! Any suggestions?

I have a 1999 Honda CR-V. For the past year ... every once in a while the engine starts shaking very hard. It lasts about 10-20 seconds. The whole car shakes. It could be happening when the car is shifting gears- i'm not sure? This is starting to happen more frequently now (about every time I drive the car). Do i need to replace the transmission? Where can i find a cheap replacement?

I was driving home one day day going about 60mph on the freeway and I tried to speed up but when I pressed teh gas I felt a little pull as if the car decelerated a bit and I had to press harder on the gas to keep it going at the same rate. About 6 miles later my check engine light came on. I went to an auto store, checked fluids, all were present and clear. I head home, too late for a mechanic, about a mile later I felt the car become really sluggish. I went home just a few blocks away and just parked my car. The next day I went to a shop my friend owns and got the bad news that my transmission was dead!!! This sucks!
And teh worst part is that I can not pin point anything I ever did to mistreat my baby! I'm all about the every 3000 mile oil change but I do have 160,000 miles on my Honda CRV, is this a reasonable lifetime for a transmission? or am I just being a poor loser weiner because I am taking the bus to work for 2 hours every morning, thank god and my ex boyfriend, I get a ride home at night!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah whats a reasonabe price too? just wondering, keeping my frineds honest!

I have a 1999 Honda CRV that seems to have a transmission problem. Occasionally while driving, it seems it won't shift above 2nd gear. Then it begins shuddering as if it's slipping out of gear. Finally, it seems to be in neutral. After stopping you can move the gear shift through all gears with no affect. It seems to stay in neutral. The problem corrects itself (temporarily) if you turn the engine off and back on.
The kicker is that my mechanic, a Honda specialist, has tried twice and cannot make the problem happen. So he doesn't know what to do.
Any suggestions?
I have a 1999 CR-V that is creating some stress. Three weeks ago the engine light came on. Tried the tightening the gas cap first, as instructed in manual. Light went out. Two days later it came back on. Took it to a mechanic. Got new spark plugs. Light went out. Two days later light came back on. Took it back to mechanic. Faulty spark plug. Three days later light back on. Took it to another mechanic. Put in new plug wires (whatever they are). Light has been out ever since. However, someone said I should have the transmission checked. I've scheduled a computer diagnostic test to see if I really do have transmission trouble. Anyone got any answers or advice.

It's me again, BillV. The problem I described above progressed to complete transmission failure. I had it rebuilt,$1800. A couple of months later, same thing. This time it was rebuilt under warranty. Yesterday reverse fails. It's back at the shop. Warranty from previous work should cover this too.
My question, why does this keep happening? Is my mechanic incompetent? Is Honda's transmission just a piece of junk? Will a replacement transmission be any better? Silly question. I couldn't afford that anyway.
Help!!!

hello....I have a CRV 1999 and the four doors are making a noise when a open or close them.....i already put grease on the small metallic part that holds the door with the main frame....but the noise is still there....also I have a noise when a push the clutch pedal that is making me crazy .
Please help
I have 99 crv that the back door on the driver's side makes a metal screeching noise when opening and closing. If this is the same noise I put graphite from the hobby shop used for the wheels on hobby cars. I put it on the metal rod that goes in and out of the door when opening and closing. It fixed the problem for about 6 months. I bought it at a local Micheals store.

I have a Honda 2000 CRV which I bought at 45,000 miles and I have been very happy with it. I want a newer model. Never the less I feel that my transmission keeps slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. I have read all of your complaints so what do we do. Its one thing to say we are all going to write a letter to Honda and what hopefully get honda to repair our transmissions or reinburse us for the ones we already paid for to get repaired. I dont know will honda do this I am going to write a letter to honda and ask them myself i will let you know what happens.

Thanks for all these. Just got a CRV 200O @ 100K MILES in sept 07. My problem is similar to Billv's. i got the transmission changed for $2000 for a used one. it is working fine now. i dont think a rebuilt one will last long.
however am battling with my engine light coming on intermittently after changing of plugs. maybe i should try the wires.
Does anyone has any suggetions?????????
