I have a 1999 Honda CRV that seems to have a transmission problem. Occasionally while driving, it seems it won't shift above 2nd gear. Then it begins shuddering as if it's slipping out of gear. Finally, it seems to be in neutral. After stopping you can move the gear shift through all gears with no affect. It seems to stay in neutral. The problem corrects itself (temporarily) if you turn the engine off and back on.
The kicker is that my mechanic, a Honda specialist, has tried twice and cannot make the problem happen. So he doesn't know what to do.
Any suggestions?

That seems like a problem I encounter with my 98 cr-v. It only really happens after iv been driving fast. Try flooring it and see if it happens more often when you do that, and if it does just tell your mechanic to do that.

I have a 1999 and it sounds like the same, to a lesser degree, happens with mine. I took it to the dealership and they said dont worry about it, so I dont. I find that not trying to baby it, nor trying to hot rod it, is when it drives the best. If it just quits then it just quits but, so far it just keeps going. You might consider servicing the tranny. Use only Honda fluid. It doesnt need much for a standard service and it's easy to do yourself.

I have a similar problem. When the car is cold it shifts through all the gears fine. When it has been driven for about 5 miles and heats up it begins to slip in 3rd and 4th gear - still ok in first and second gear. Any ideas?

We have a 2002 CR-V. We bought it used and it has approx. 82,000 mi on it now. Last evening we turned a corner to come home, heard a clunk (thought it was a pot-hole) and the service engine light came on and the green D indicator light (the one for Drive) began flashing. We got home, stopped for the garage door to go up and the vehicle would not move! Is our transmission toast? Please help!

I also have a 2003 Honda CRV. When the drive gear is engaged, the "D" indicator on dash board after a few miles starts to flash. Why is this ?

I had the same problem but mine was even worse. It started just like what you indicate then suddenly it wont change gear at all. Dave send your car to auto transmission specialist. I had my auto gear box recondition and it works perfectly like new.

I have a 2000 Honda CRV. After about 40 minutes of driving (highway, then city), you can feel it shift into a lower gear and it sounds almost like a hollow vibration. This only happens when you push on the gas. After this horrible sound and lack of pick-up, it hesitates when you push the gas. It seems to work better only if you gun it. I took it in to get serviced and they couldn't seem to find a problem.

Please help.

It seems all of us 1999 Honda CRV owners have this problem. My CRV while moving past the 2nd and into 3rd gear (auto trans), it slips and then move into 4th gear and runs perfect when maintaining that speed.

I have an 05. After shifting from park to drive or reverse to drive, I hear a slight crunch? or click when I reach 10 mph. It's kind of hard to describe. The service dept. says its the ABS doing a self-test, but after I've talked to other 05 owners, they have never heard any such noise with theirs. I think my Honda dealer is giving me the run around. Anyone else ever hear of this?

I have a 98 and it shifts really hard. The transmission shop said that I need to replace the transmission at a cost of 2500.00 to 3500.00. Is there another option or does anyone know of a lower cost transmission?

My 2001 crv just blew a transmission with only 80,000 miles and my neighbor's 2002 civic also just blew a transmission with 70,000 miles. I am very upset with Honda, I had to pay $400.00 to get the car towed(we were on vacation) & 1700.00 to repair the trans!!! I am going to write them a letter. It is ironic because my hubby has a 1999 dodge caravan that he hardly services & it is still running like a charm....

I have a 98 CR-V and I am just now having trouble after about reaching 130,000 miles... like Neilson my car is having a hard time switching to a higher gear, not even tapping the break does the trick. I am going to try to use the fluid that he suggested, but I need to figure out something a little more long term, especially since I have to make a few trips in the upcoming weeks. Any suggestions? Any and all help would be appreciated, I'm helpless on this subject.
