My truck has run great since I bought it new. It has 80,000 miles. Two weeks ago the ABS light came on and I had to replace a part (electronic relay box) for $800. including labor. Two weeks later - and this is what concerns me - I was taking a trip. About a hundred miles from home, after driving awhile on a highway, then slowing down for stoplights in a small town, it seemed to shift into first gear hard when I left a light. The Service Enging Light came on. I returned home. My regular mechanic (whom I trust) said that it only needed some transmission "kit." He sent me to a transmission specialist who called it a "valve kit" and that it would cost about $300. But then he also said that he may have to redo the whole thing for nearly $2,000.
Has anyone had experienced with this sort of problem. I didn't think the truck would need a new trans after only 80,000 miles. I have an appointment tomorrow with the trans specialist. I'm praying it ain't the big fix that will cost $2,000. Thank you, and take care everybody.

My trans has been slowly deteriorating. If I drive for about an hour in overdrive then overdrive seems to stop working and then it feels like I am driving in 3rd gear. Then when shifting 1st, 2nd, 3rd it's a hard shift. If I let the truck cool down then I regain the gear. When truck is cool it acts as though 4th gear is slipping at lower RPM's. Maybe the converter is not locking up correctly.
My ABS light is now giving me trouble.

You need the updated valve in the Tranny. GM hasn't recalled them but thats what mine was doing. Bought mine used and it had the problem. Frist they put another used Tranny in it Didn't do anything. So they found there was a valve they change to fix the same problem yours is haveing. Runs and shifts fine now.

I have a 1998 GMC Sanoma, the tranny does not slip but, it shifts very hard into second gear and third is not as bad. No engine light on but someone could have unhooked it.

I have a 2000 sonoma with about 48000 miles on it. I have left it stock except for the trans. I think the stock trans is junk. I have put in a corvette servo, which drasticly improved the shift from 1st to 2nd. Instead of the sluggish grandma shifts, I get a more positive quick shift. I tried a electronic shift improver which increases the line pressure, but it shifted too hard. Chirping second was fun but trashing my u-joints isn't. As for the 2000 dollar rebuild that is outrageous. You can get a rebuilt trans with all the goodies in it for about 1200, and it should only take about 2 to 3 hours to remove and replace that trans. If you do get your trans rebuilt be sure to get all the upgrades. Also I suggest getting an external trans cooler and a 160 or 180 degree thermostat. Heat kills transmissions!!! If you do this and it is done right!! your transmission should last for hundreds of thousands miles. If you have any questions you can e-mail me [email protected]

P.S.- A quick way to tell if trans is on its way down, Examine your fluid: bright red=good dark reddish brown= bad Also smell it, If it stinks you got problems.

I need to get the transmission out of my truck so I can replace the torque converter. While driving the automatic it slips out of 2nd and whines out before gently slipping to 3rd. Any suggestions?

to answer my own question I cooked the tranny the cooling line somehow got clogged and the tranny overheated. Two pistons were melted and the wiring harness got so hot it cracked. After replacing the pump seals torque converter the two pistons in the pump and the wiring harness all seems to be good. It was a complete rebuild

I have a 1998 Sonoma with 170000. last year i drove into a puddle that was alot deeper than i expected. i had to get pulled out and then drain the water out of my cylinders before it would turn over. once i got it started i have no reverse and a hard shift into second. i thought the puddle did it but now im wondering if my tranny just happened to go right at that time. i think i need a new transmission but would be awsome if it were something cheeper. any ideas?
