anyone know anything about autoshifts?

the x-y shifter and speed censor has been repaced.

it kicks out of cruise, the speedo goes to zero, check engine light comes on, then it gets stuck in gear, then the tranny light comes on.

u can reset the computer and it works fine for awhile, then does it all over again.

could this be a "datalink" issue?

I have no clue but sounds like a piece of shit issue. I got a similar problem with it shifting non stop in and out no matter what in and out of 8 to 9. On top the engine light comes on. And in the middle of autoshift the truck revs and seems it can't find what the hell it needs to do even when I try to put the tranny into 7th still f***s up and up and down the mnts I'm doing 35 cause of lost momentum when I should be hanging around 55 or better. I hate this truck and FL should be ashamed

It does sound like an intermittent J1939 datalink issue, it is required to broadcast the speed signal to the engine ECM then to the instrument cluster, it is also required for cruise to work. The wires are yellow and green but are probably hidden with black wire loom. To help identify it look near the trans ECM connector for a large plastic y type connector with three barrel plugs attached to it. One goes to trans ECM one goes toward the engine and the one with no wires on it is a 120 ohm resistor. The datalink travels to the engine if the engine ecm is located externally. On later models this was moved to inside the cab. In either case the data link must reach this ECM for proper shifting and speed detection. If the ecm is inside the cab it will be either in the right b-pillar or behind the park brake valve The wire travels from the trans to the left front wall goes across the tunnel and goes through the innermost bulkhead wire connector on the right front wall. It will make its way accross the dash and end up in the left b-pillar for the ABS brakes but you should only be concerned about the physicl link between the engine and trans ECM regardless of the other branches. There is another 120 ohm resistor in the the left b-pillar. The two together make 60 ohms. If you can remove the connector from the engine ecm, locate the yellow and green J1939 wire and ohm them with a multimeter, it should read about 60 ohms. If it does it means that the wires are making contact with both resistors. Have someone wiggle the wires anywhere you can get hold of them especilly the connectors and watch for the ohm meter reading to increase to about 120 ohms to help find the problem.

CAN J1939 issue.... not sure, check the wiring fist and connector on tranny controll unit (that is bolted on tranny of course). if you are not sure wire is good, rewire!

To be sure use Eaton Service Ranger to read stored codes. if there is VSS faults stored in TCM rewire VSS circuit. If VSS fails, there is no speed data on J1939 and Engine ECU will store j1939 related codes.

belive me, wrong speed reading may cause wrong shift down strategy that may destroy tranny and overload/toast x-y motors and sometimes motor drive transistors in control unit (it is impossible to disassembly and repare).

2004 trident bus. the a.b.s light is on and the fault code 17-3 which is j1939 bus off detected. the can line is reading 120 ohms. ive located the front terminating resister ive then traced and checked all other cables to the rear of engine. this bus had an engine conversion to a euro 4 engine and where the terminating resister at the rear used to be on the triple plug now has a can lead going to an ad blue douser unit.problem is i cant seem to source where they have located the 2nd terminating resister??

I have the same problem, 4 different shops (2 freightliner dealer) have looked at it and no one has found a problem yet.

I have an 07 columbia with the smart shift, they have a lot of wiring problems. They have wires under the splash pan that rub threw. and if you have ever taken the panel off under the fuse panel on the passenger side of the cab, putting the screws back on, many times will pinch the little gray wires around them and most of them are data lines.

My is 05 and does same thing. They did same thing with replacing X-Y shifter and speed sensor but did not change anything. Do you have problem with your voltage oscilating? My voltage goes from 13.8 to 13.1 up hill and that is usualy when transmision gets stuck in the gear. Last thing they did was replacing two bateries that were bad.

eaton has horrible problem with their harnesses, controllers and x-y shifters. make sure your fuel filters are good. if they are plugged the trans may not go into top gear or have power problems. the power and ground wires need to be connected directly to the batteries. a lot of times the ground goes to the frame rail behind the cab and doesn't get a good connection from the welded stud. the programming needs to be updated to the latest levels. some times it helps, but not too often. the harnesses rub through on brackets. there is a bulletin out for checking the harness for damage. anything more than that may be the shift controller of x-y.

The 10load f isn't a code. It flashes in and out on the shift indicator. Mine has done it for 2a years and numerous garages including detroit have never heard of it. You have to pull over and wait 30to minutes sometimes. Its really aggravating especially on a hill. It may do it once a week or 10should times a day.

There is a trouble shooting guides on the road ranger web site witch is a part of the eaton web. Just put in your model and serial you will have a complete guide to your trans

I know a little about the piles, they have problems with the eaton proprietary link which is the high speed datalink that the computers talk t each other thru. that said, hope you got time and patients and some shit clothes you dont mind ruining climbin on the tranny...hahaha have fun i feel for ya.
