Word is that Ford will not keep the Highland Park plant open any longer than summer of 2009. It will the start importing the Ranger model from it's newly opened plant in Thailand.

Buy American is a tired phrase. The Ranger is a lemon that isn't worth keeping. Besides the American label means nothing when nearly everything is being outsourced. Buy American more likely means buying Japanese owned cars manufactured here in the good old usa.

Buying American isn't applicable in the global ecomonmy. Most Toyota's and Honda's are made in the US. Furthermore, almost all American firms outsource jobs to other countries.

So, to qualify Jim's statement,'Buy stuff made by Americans'. Good luck trying to figure it out.

If Ford could drop a diesel or Hyrbrid engine in the Ranger that would allow it to get 30mpg they wouldn't be able to make them fast enough.

Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ, Chevy HHR, Made in Mexico.
Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Subaru Forester, BMW, Made in the USA.
I know the profits go to Detroit or Tokyo, but who will build a better car and who employs the American worker? They couldn't even build Lionel Trains there, they had to bring them back here.
Buy things that are made in America!

Love my Ranger, I do wish it had better fuel economy, gets about 18-21 MPG. Never had any problems with it and hauls more than you'd think for a small pickup.

I used to drive a Ranger 4x4 for work. Loved it! The economy is global. The world is "flat". Buy the car you want and put an American flag sticker in the window if it makes you feel good. Read "The World is Flat" by T. Friedman and move on with your American life.

You brain dead idiots claim these Jap brand cars are made in the USA.

Take a look at the content sticker and see the engine and transmissions are made off shore and other parts are made off shore but not reported as Jap made. The vehicles are assembled in the USA.

If ya don't see the difference ya better start courses in Chinese.

It's finally become clear why they're closing the St. Paul plant. It's profitable. Ford reasoned, if we're making money here, think how much more we'll make by making them overseas.

Ford doesn't make any money in the U.S. right now. They currently make money only in foreign markets. The world is flat people. My wife went to Memphis and brought home a cotton Tee shirt... from Nicaragua. No cotton in Memphis!?!? American is changing - FAST.

Can't be no worse then where Reaganomics have led us. Im starting to believe this is a cliche. Republicans are so worried about taxes, yet they have managed to ruin the economy.

My 2005 Ranger 2Wd four cylinder stick with AC gets actual 22 fall and spring and 20 MPG winter and (AC) summer. Short trips in town.

Zero defects.

Jap? What the heck are you? 85 years old? Lesson to you: Japan has been a pretty darn good ally of this country for well over half a century. Time to come to the 21st century.

I had a 2005 Ranger and it was a pretty good truck. The biggest problem with is the technology is all a decade old. Why the American carmakers never seem to come up with new features but always follow their foreign competition by about 4 years, I don't know. They lost a whole generation of cutomers in the eigties and ninties by making lots of cars no one wants to buy. Is really a surprise now that oil is highly priced. The price has been going up slowly but surely since the oil embargo of 1974. Surely our automakers could have adapted to that reality without the government milage mandates over all those years. But no, they were more than happy to drag their heels and complain while they made huge profits while not looking to the future. I wouldn't buy American made products unless they are as good as any others on the market. Otherwise these companies just keep making the same old junk. The companies and unions are too fat and happy to change. Just a little food for thought.
