1986 Thunderbird Rocker Panels (Please give me advice)

Hello. I'm restoring a 1986 Thunderbird. It's a 3.8L V6. I'm getting ready to paint it back to original color and I'm curious about how my rocker panels are supposed to be.
On every 86 T-bird I have seen, the rocker panel is about 3-4 inches wide and stretches around the entire car. On the sides of the car, my rocker panel is very thin (1-2 inches). But the rest of the panel is about 3-4 inches. I don't see any place where the panel was removed or such.
Do you think my car was made this way, or did someone modify the design? I'm going for orignality in the car.
Thanks for any information
