my sister's 99 taurus has the same problem. flushed the heater core and it worked for 2 months. but not like a heater should. it was warm at best. not hot. the coolant in these cars need to be serviced regularly. for some reason they have alot of corrosion and sludge. going to check the blend door now. this trouble shooting is ridiculous. and if you are just taking guesses listening to the dealers you would throw more money at this car than what its worth. i am a die-hard ford fan but this is by far their worst creation

Forgot to add it's a 98 SE.
It might be the blend door actuator. Its a device behind the dash that turns a door up for heat and down for cold.. it might be stuck on the down position.

I have a 2003 Taurus and I have heat problems. History is that I had low coolant level and the low coolant light came on. I added coolant and next day the engine light came on. Next day the heat stopped working, just blowing cool air. I researched online and checked hoses to core to verify hot with flow and both were. No water pump problems and temp guage works fine on dash. I replaced the blend door actuator and saw the blend door arm was not broken, no change after replacment. I had it in the shop and they did a diagnostic showing thermostat bad, it was replaced. Still no heat and engine light came back on 2 days later. Then car was stalling out, diagnostic again showed ETC sensor bad and stalling car. Replaced, still no heat. Any help, very frusterated & cold.

I have a 2002 Taurus SE and I have heat ON LOW ONLY!! When I turn up the blower the air will change to cold air. When I turn it back down to low the air will turn warm again after a few min. So I basically have to drive around with a trickle heat and it never gets warm. The AC and blower (recently replaced) works just fine, just no heat on any air speed other than low. Could this be the same "arm" or "mixing door" mentioned above?

I have a 1997 Taurus GL 3.0 2V and am having a problem with the coolant coming out the fill cap. The pressure actually has blown the cap off a couple times. Outside of the head gasket what could it be?

I have a 2002 Taurus the heater only works on High at 90 degrees on defrost. It has a electric push button system in it. If I hit the off button nothing happens. Had it to a mechanic who tried to replace the flapper to fix it. That wasn't it. Said it was a brain box for the heater system but that didn't seem to work either. What could this be? I am at a loss. It is great that it is on defrost but I can't drive it because it puts me to sleep. Please Help

I have exactly the same problem on my son's 2002 Tauras. I did flush the cooling system, and was getting GREAT heat. However, when he drove the next day, he said it blew cold only. I'm thinking possible heater control valve, or the heat control is not changing (sliping) or something. Will try to inspect under this control over weekend.
Did you find a solution for your problem.

Flushed Core only.Brown at first then flowed freely and clean Then drained radiator of old antifreeze, refiled w/ water, ran for 10 mins and re-drained. Dirty brown again but then flowed clear. Filled radiator with flush treatment and water and drove car highway and local for about 6 hours over a few days. Engine temp stayed in good zone whole time. Drained, refilled with 50/50 antifreeze/water mix, But still no freakin' heat. What next? Are there 2 separate thermostats, 1 for engine, 1 regulating flow through core?(I've not changed any thermostat yet.) Also I see that the hose from RADIATOR on its way to the core forks off at one point into 2 separate directions. 1 goes directly to the core the other seems to go back into the engine. What's that all about? Is this a safety setup of some kind? Thanks All. Car runs at normal temp. All liquids captured.
The fork you saw is the heater core bypass. So when you thought you were flushing the core, you were actually flushing the bypass. The flush simply bypassed the clogged core. I installed a shut off valve on the bypas, forcing the flow o go through the core. Once I atually flushed the core, I was able to restore heat!
