Ford to eliminate shift in Chicago

“It won't mean we're going down to one shift because we stamp for other Ford plants as well.”

Ford Motor Co. said Monday it would eliminate one of two shifts at its Chicago assembly plant this summer to align production with dwindling demand.

The plant employs about 2,300, including 2,000 hourly workers in the United Auto Workers union. The number who would be laid off will hinge on how many accept buyout or early retirement packages recently offered to all of Ford's 54,000 UAW members, spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said.

Gattari said sales of the Chicagobuilt vehicles would determine whether the second shift is reinstated. Ford says its plan to be profitable again in 2009 will require matching production to demand. Read more

Buy america products the steel workers almost when under.Thanks to goverment puting a tariff tax on Japan steel products made with cheap labor
that is now happening again in auto industry. Also you cannot buy a tv made in america anymore .WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

You should be happy buying that Asian car. You are putting food on that empoyees table and help putting his kid through school. When are we going to wake up I live in Canada and since 2002 we have lost over 500 thousand good paying manufacturing jobs and for every auto job we lose we are losing another 7 spinoff jobs. It is time the goverment did somthing about the unfair trade imbalance between asia and North America..something to think about..

Hmmmm...another thread today said that Ford is going to open a plant in Mexico. I guess that's American and they probably won't only settle for only $25 an hour!

My family walked away from a head-on collision, while driving a Ford product, in suburban Will County. The other person was driving a Toyota and was badly hurt. We will never know why he drove into our car; what we do know is that Ford makes a good product. Thanks Ford
