I had a '95 model that I was happy to get rid of! I replaced the transmission 2 times and the Transmission people said what keeps them in business is the 95, 96 Taurus and front wheel drive Chryslers. You might want to get rid of it sooner rather than later.

I had a '90 Taurus that would make a very slight shudder when shifting, but seemed to occur only in the cooler Winter days. I read some articles about that and they pointed me to the fluid pump in the transmission. This is a transmission rebuild item. My next Taurus was a '94. It had a very harsh shift problem where it slammed into each gear hard. It always shifted when needed. Rebuilt the transmission and the problem was gone. Unfortunately, the engine blew up 5000 miles later due to my innattention to detail.:-( My current '01 Taurus was demonstrating a surging problem, very slight. The transmission guys thought the torque converter was kicking in and out. After a check out this turned out to not be the case. However, the car has 85000 miles so I did a tranny service. The problem went away! Yahoo!

I wish i had a suggestion, but i also own a 2002 Ford Taurus with the same type of issues. I have 92,000 and i get the surging issue around 40 MPH, typically when i'm attempting to merge onto the highway, or if i'm sitting idle at a stop light. The issue dramatically increases if i have the air conditioning on or even the fan. Ford checked it out and could only reprogram the engine, which did nothing. I haven't taken it back in yet because i don't want to continue to pay them for not fixing the problem. Would appreciate any comments. I have a 95 Taurus and I'm having similar problems. Accelerating in turns or accelerating uphill causes the transmission to jump or shudder. Any ideas would be appriciated before I have to take i to the shop.

We had a 99 Plymouth Minivan with the same thing, my 99 Taurus does it too, when you slow down to about 5-10mph...then speed up the tranny doesnt downshift untill you stop fully or extremy close to a dead stop, so when you accelerate, the tranny shifts into first gear. That is what our mechanic told us.

I have a 02 Taurus with about 70,000 miles on it (bought it used as 52,000 miles)
Recently it developed a rather loud squeaking noise from what I thought was the engine bay. I got it checked out, but my repair shop could not find the problem (at first they thought it was a bad idle pulley), but they said it was ok to ignore it, so I did.
Soon afterwards, my car began surging while I was at stoplights, and a few days after that, it would surge and then stall. Took it back and the surging/stalling problem was caused by the torque converter.
The squealing is caused by a bad tranny pump though, so I need to get that replaced now! Supposedly I'm looking towards a whole transmission rebuild. 1600 bucks.
Still, this is the only mechanical problem I've had with this car, and I've owned it for a year and three months.

I had a 90 Ford Taurus. At about 80'000 miles, it started shifting hard into 2nd gear enless I kept my foot out of it. Got 156,000 miles out of it and sold it. No other major repairs. Was a great car.

I now have a 94 Ford Taurus. Transmission is fine until I drive about 20 mins. Slow shifting, pops in and out of gear while you are driving, and no reverse. Thinking about fixing it because they are great cars other than that?????

i have an 01 taurus, the belt was squealing so i replaced it and the sound stopped. few days later it started again, and i was leaking tons of anit-freeze. the chiltons book said it was the water pump. i replaced that and i still now am leaking fluid and still have the squealing noise.
also with this car, it seems if i drive 20-30 mins, the tranny starts to slip really bad from a dead stop when i accellerate, happen to any of you fellow owners??

I have 1997 Ford Taurus with 90000 miles. I have no problems with my transmission. it actually shifts better then my two new cars. However, I have Mobil Synthetic ATF in it. Transmission is original (I purchased car brand new) nothing done to it except getting synthetic oil. When I purchased my car I had started having problems with Transmission around 10000 miles. it turn out that filter was clogged do to excessive wear. I changed filter and filled transmission with Mobil ATF. I had never had any problems with that car.
