I just got a small sub woofer for the trunk of my Taurus. I went to check out how I was going to run the wiring and found the trunk carpet very wet. Further checking and I found the spare tire compartment had about 1 to 2 inches of water in it. Also the drivers side rear wheel whell had water up to the vent in the side. We had a very hard rain today and the total rain fall was significant. So I don't know if the water was from one rain or has been building up. The seal around the trunk is in very good shape. I can't tell where the water came from. The only thing that I found that might have made a difference was on the drivers side of the lid, the adjustable stop was turned out quite a bit further than the passenger side. Maybe this was holding the lid up high enough for a leak. But I still don't see how the water could have gotten up and over the trunk seal if that was the case. Anybody had this problem or have any idea's? Thanks for any help.

If I was trying to diagnose this problem I would dry the seal around the trunk and then wet down the exterior well and see if you can see where the water gets in by inspecting the seal. A tarp or whatever spread out in the trunk might give some info too according to where it gets wet.

I just tried that, and I think its possibly coming in under the trunk seal in the rear near the drivers side tail light. The seal seems to be just pushed onto the metal lip, not sealed in any way. I might run some silicon sealant around the outside edge of the seal and see if that makes a difference. Not much came in after the hosing, but maybe readjusting the stop I talked about in the first post made a difference. Time and some heavy rains will tell I guess. Thanks for your post.

No problem...there's nothing worse than a drownded sub woofer.

Brian! Just was googling about water in my trunk and came onto this forum! I have a 1998 Ford Taurus, and just this week, three weeks after a tropical storm and 1 week after a noreaster, I smelled must and mold and opened my trunk to the same problem! Water in both wheel wells and three inches sitting in my spare tire compartment (and moldy books, carpets, etc...). Did you discover anything in your pursuits? I hosed down the back of my car, with newspapers laid out in the--now bare--trunk, with no water noted. Gasket around the trunk seems to be good...can't see up into the area around the wheel to tell if it comes up from below...three days of rain predicted next week... Please post if you came upon a solution to this! Brian Guinnip wrote: I just got a small sub woofer for the trunk of my Taurus. I believe I found the problem, but haven't had a rain storm since. My back seat folds down so you can look directly into the trunk. During our last heavy rain, I armed myself with my maglight and ventured into the trunk area via the back seat. There was a small, but steady stream of water coming from the rear area closer to the drivers side tailight. I had already taken the carpet and the back plastic piece out. So I had a good visual. It appears that the water is flowing down the trunk lid channel and getting up under the rubber seal and around the metal lip it's riding on. The seal was loose, and pulled right up. I got some good silicon sealer and ran it around the outside of the seal and also were it was loose, in side on the lip before pushing the seal back in place. That should take care of it. We'll see. Coming in where it was, and the quantity of water, it could easily spread out at the back part of the trunk and fill all three chambers. I didn't see it leaking anywhere else. Hope this helps you too.

I'm not sure how it comes up with where I'm from, but neither Buffalo or Alfred Station. I'm from Angelica, NY

Well it's raining out, and I've crawled into the trunk. No leak so far. Think I've got it. Will check later again, we're supposed to be getting some harder rain.

Thanx so much for this idea! it rained hard last night, and I considered it progress that I was able to check this am for water given that I had not driven the car to have it coming up from the bottom. Now I need to pray for another rain so I can have the flashlight party in the trunk! Good idea and I will try it!

Well we've had plenty of rain and the trunk is dry as a bone. Resealing the trunk seal seems to have done the trick. Good luck with yours Cathy.

Seems that Ford Taurus has a trunk problem. we own a 03 and a few days ago i opened the trunk and noticed the passangers side wheel well was wet. I didn't look any further at the time because i was really busy, today i was getting stuff out of the trunk and noticed a pool of water sitting on it, when I peaked at the spare tire there was a good 3 inches of water sitting in there and the cover was smelling pretty moldy. Thanks for the advice on what the problem most likely is. Seems odd that this many Tauruses are having the same problem though!

I don't know if they were just cheap with the sealer, or it was some bad stuff. But since I resealed it with silicone, no leaks. Good luck with yours. By the way, I used GE Silicone II 100% silicone clear sealant. Seems to be good stuff.

Hey guys my 2000 Taurus has the same water in trunk problem. I pulled the body plug in the spare tire well and drained the water and dried it. I used a hoses and light and couldnt find any leaks. After a couple of months the water was back. I drained it again and looked for leaks again. Then I noticed in the wheel wells underneath the car that there are two drain holes (they look like black gromettes but have slits in the middle. I pushed my finger throught the driver side vent hole and nothing. I pushed my finger through the Passenger side hole and got drenched. But after I had unplugged the drain all the water ran out. I hope this is my problem. Good Luck to all

Did you resilicone the trunk seal(rubber gasket)? You are not supposed to get water in any of the areas with those plugs in them. You just let the water out, and haven't solved the leak yet.

I have 2000 Taurus and I gave up years ago trying to find the source of the leak. I pulled the plugs under the spare and just don't put anything valuable in the trunk anymore. I wasted days on this several years ago before deciding to pull the plugs and let it run straight through. No wonder they stopped making the Taurus!

Thank God!
I have been having this issue for the last few months. I am taking off work this week to fix this problem before the next rain.

I own a 2003 Taurus. Last year I was surprised to find the wheel well in the trunk almost half full of water. Took it to the dealer, TWICE, the second time they kept the car for a full weeek. Told me they had someone who contracts their body jobs look right below where the lock latches in the center. Supposedly they found the leak and corrected it, last November, same problem! Unplugged and drained it. Took it to a car wash for detailing and super cleaning the trunk. The amount of mold, was mind boggling, both my wife and I were sick for weeks. Today, you guessed it, wheel well half full of water. Can't we hold Ford liable, THEY MUST know about this problem. We're driving "sick cars", our healths are in danger. How should proceed with a claim, anybody know??

Well it's been months since I resealed the rubber seal, and still no leaks. Thought I'd let you know.

Specifically, how did you re-seal the trunk seal? Did you just bead the overall strip on top? Did you pull the seal off, apply silicone and seal the bottom ? I'd appreciate your help. JEFF
