I think hands down, an S-10 is the best car that you can get under $5000. I have been scouring Craig's List and Auto Trader for a decent car under $5000.

Sure you could always go with a used Civic or Accord but those are so boring. They have no flash or zip.

I love the S-10 series. For under $5000 you can get a four cylinder, auto or stick, with low mileage that's just as practical as the Hondas but more useful. With proper maintanence they last nearly 200,000 miles.

The four cylinders are a bit under powered, but you cant beat the gas mileage. The 4.3 is a gas hog but there are certainly worse vehicles out there.

I've had both the 4.3 and the 2.2 and love the four cylinder much more and it is friendly on the wallet. I am in the process of buying one. I found quite a few with less than 100,000 miles under $5000.

People looking for cars generally don't want a pickup.

Good list. These cars still have plenty of life left in them. I'd be wary of the Audi, as repair and maintenance costs could eat you alive. I'd rather pay cash for an under $5K car then take out a loan for anything.
