My 2002 Ford Ranger XLT won't start. It will crank and turn over (although I think we may have run down the battery considerably) but it won't start firing. If I spray starting fluid into the air intake it will start for a few seconds, then I hear a sound like metal on metal (maybe the engine running dry?) and it quits. When I spray in starting fluid and press down on the gas, the engine revs to about 3400 rpm. The fuse is fine, the emergency fuel shutoff switch is pressed in (fuel should be running), all of the fuses and relays are fine. From what we've heard and seen we think the fuel pump has gone out.
I had this problem the first day I got the car from my grandfather (it had been sitting in a shed for a while). After letting the car sit for a few hours, we tried a few more times to start it and it worked. No luck this time. The car's been stuck in the parking lot for 2 days now. We don't want to have to tow it, but it looks like that's what we'll have to do. Does anyone have any suggestions about what else might be wrong or how to fix this without replacing the fuel pump?
At least, getting it started just once so we can get it to a mechanic would be great.

My '05 ranger was fine when I parked in the morning and cranked fine but wouldn't fire when I tried to start to drive home. I checked fuses and relays and sprayed either in the intake. That made it run for a second but it wasn't getting any fuel.
After reading this forum I read my owners manual more closely and discovered the emergency fuel shut-off switch inside the passengers side fuse box opening.
Once I pushed it the dash lights changed and it started on the first crank. This switch is designed to stop the flow of gas in the event of an accident. I think one of you called it the inertia switch but I didn't recognize that terminology. I have to attribute this event to my backing down hill into a curb as I was parking. Not really that much of a jar, but maybe it was enough.
My thanks to this forum for helping me save a stupid service bill!

There is a Tech Bulletin out to replace the inertia switch on the 2005 Ford Ranger. The inertia switch shut off the gas on my Ranger while I was passing a semi truck uphill in a rural mountain area. I was lucky to be able to coast to the shoulder and stop. Another 100' and I would have been disabled in the lane on a two lane highway. Ford does not think something as serious as this should be a safety recall.

i have an 01 ranger i have power to the dash but the engine wont crank any ideas?? i was thinking it might be the break switch (the one that wont let the vehicle start without the break depressed), but im not sure. any help would be appreciated.

Having the same issue with my son's 02 Ford Ranger 3.0. It runs perfect when it runs. I frequently get the call "Dad, my truck won't start". He always has enough gas in the tank, but it acts like it is not getting fuel. The last two times I brought the gas can anyway and put in a couple gallons -- tonight a couple gallons filled it to the top. For some reason it has started after putting in a little more gas the last two times. I have no idea what is causing this ...

check the fuse in the fuse box that is under the hood.the box that is close to the front of the truck. their are squar fuses that have little glass doors on top that can open.take one at a time out and see if they are gone.you will know by looking down at then .if the copper is split they are gone they are 40amp and 50 amp fues
price around $7.00 each

I have a 02 Ranger mine had the same problem, have you check the spark plugs. I had to change my spark plug wires, spark plugs, coil pack, fuel filter and my fuel pump. I spend around $1000.00 or less to get it back yo running right. but I think it was the fuel pump which i paid $683.34 or the battery $12397. When i replace most of the other stuff i still had problems where i would have to sit in my truck for 45 - 1 hour and 30 mins for it to start back up.

Pull number one plug see if your getting spark if not you have eccesive moisture on or to ignition coil . Or bad coil pack or broken loose damaged timing belt..... If you are getting spark pull off fuel line on top of engine put it in a two liter bottle turn over engine to see if your getting fuel process of elimination.
