I had all these same problems and I took the iac off and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Don't use brake cleaner it's too harsh. If the little plunger in there is not moving correct then the air is not being balanced causing it to run very rough on idle. And the computer will not kick the code for that. It will only kick the code for it if the electronics of it go bad. It is located on top on intake with 2 8mm bolts and 1 wire snap very easy to do.

rough idle and misfire on#5. have replaced plugs, plug wires,#5 fuel injector and coil pack. still have the problem. What's next?
I just cured my rough idle on my 2002 Mazda/ford b3000 v6 3.0 with 110k miles on it.

3 main issues;

1. Timing chain was so loose it was off almost a tooth. will cause a rough idle for sure.

2. Vacuum lines were brittle, replaced them all. spent 3 hours between Mazda (ps just go to ford much cheaper) and Napa auto-parts.

3. My coil pack was bad.#1 was not firing. will cause a rough idle. i just pulled each plug wire off the coil pack one by one and noted if it made a difference, and yup one didn't do anything when i pulled it off.

FYI; you will only get a trouble code if the problem is within the emission system, between the intake to the exhaust including sensors for the system. mine did not have any codes, even with a dead cylinder you think it would be rich which would make a trouble code show up.

WELL JOIN THE CLUB DALE, NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM!! I HAVE A 2005 FORD RANGER WITH A SIMULAR PROBLEM.ALTHOUGH MY RANGER RUNS FINE IF DON'T STOP AT A RED LIGHT FOR MORE THAN 2 TO 3 MINUTES!!AND THAT'S WHEN I EXPERIENCE THE ROUGH IDLE.AND WHEN I TRY TO PROCEED I CAN ONLY GO NO MORE THAN 5 MILES PER HOUR!! EVENTUALLY AFTER ABOUT A BLOCK IT RUNS NORMAL AGAIN,WHICH IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!I TOOK IT TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND THE RESULTS SHOW THAT #6 PLUG MISFIRE!!I CHANGED PLUGS,WIRES,CHECKED COIL PACK,ECT...SO DON'T FEEL LIKE THE LONE RANGER!!I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!

I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 2.3L
Recently It has started acting really funny I have no problems out of It until the engine temp gets to normal range from there It hesitates to accelerate in first gear until the RPM gets high enough then It does this slight jumping/ Jerking kinda thing while accelerating at a high RPM... When I cruise at 45 MPH it acts like nothing's wrong with It I have poor fuel economy every now and then when I go up a hill it will have loss of power and do this slight shaking and some pop noise... I have replaced Vacuum hoses, EGR Valve, Cleaned Complete Fuel System, New Plugs & Wires, Waterpump & Thermostat

WOW! This is almost funny if it werenít so sad. Everybody keeps asking the same questions over & over but no one is coming up with a real answer. 2000 Ranger/4.0/4x4/5s auto/128k miles. Rough idle at stop lights but smoothes out upon acceleration. Misfire on #3 cylinder, yada, yada, yada. Just like a hundred comments before me, started replacing stuff. New idle control module, plug wires, plugs, new fuel injectors, cleaned & checked everything. Engine in pristine condition. Always ends up idling like itís misfiring. Can anyone offer a definitive solution? Iím reading a lot of ďcould be this, could be thatĒ I donít get the vacuum tube thing. How can a vacuum leak make one cylinder misfire? How about an answer from someone who knows what their talking about?

I've got a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge, and it idles good, runs good, but if i hit the gas hard,it misfires, and when i back off and hit the gas slow,it picks up speed.Which o2 sensor should i replace?
That's about like telling someone a guy was wearing a blue hat and the other a yellow. Then asking; which one was wearing the gray hat?

Sounds like your problem is timing related though. I would check the timing chain to make sure it's not stretched too far.

I am in the same boat as everyone else here. I am also a mechanic by trade and have checked ALL the usual stuff like most have done here. SAM from Dallas brings up a good point.

I want to know, how many have replaced head gaskets and still have the same problem?

My problem is intermittent as well. Only happens at idle, gets better with the A/C on, have already replaced coil, plugs, wires. Checked the pins on the PCM, cleaned the PCV valve.

I replaced head gaskets on my truck 70K ago so I am not feeling real healthy that is the problem. Also because I have done all checks (pull plugs and look for wetness, pulled radiator cap and no bubbles). I also don't feel it's head gaskets because it's intermittent. IT's been my experience that head gaskets go bad and stay bad.

Since this only effects things at an idle I am getting ready to replace the IAC valve. I will update after.
