My timing belt broke completely. I installed a new one according to the manual. I put the key way at 12 oclock and lined up both arrows and diamonds on camshaft and oil pump sprockets. engine won't fire! When I turn engine over I can't get a compression stroke on #1 cylinder with spark plug out! when I look in #1 spark plug hole I see a valve sticking down -exhaust I think (which I think should actually be closed on #1 compression stroke). What could possibly be wrong. I tried reinstalling belt several times and no start!

I figured out problem! The camshaft and secondary (oil pump) sprocket have two alignment marks each.........Book says nothing about that. I tried the other set of arrows and it fired right up! The books sure aren't very specific about things like this!

So what marks did you line up, I lined up the triangle on the camshaft sprocket, with the triangle, and the diamond on the oil pump with the diamond, what have I done wrong?

line the camshaft diamonds up. line oil pump diamonds up.. line crankshaft diamonds up, then spin crankshaft clockwise half turn. install belt, and check compression.. worked for me!

I have a Mazda 2.5L with similar problem except it fires and runs, but very rough and will not accelerate. It acts like a timing problem, but we were very carefful to do as the manual said. It was very vague. The camshaft pulley has a diamond and a notch on it. How did you finally get yours going?

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger with a 2.5 L engine. I wanted to get more indepth instruction how to remove the timing belt and re-installation. I know the engine should be at TDC before starting this process. I assumed the marks would all be in alignment at this point. If you go to turning once you are at TDC could you not risk damaging the valves? I am asking. I am by no means a professional. But I have always done all of my vehicle maintenance, and have a technical engineering background. I would appreciate any solid advice. Thanks!

2 marks are on the Cam pully a Triangle and a diamond , Align the Triangle with triangle an diamond with diamond on the back plastic timing cover the diamond mark is for the middle oil pump pully , i agree with finding TDC first i used a old plug wire i had cut in the #1 cyl plus its a good idea to change the tensioner i didnt buy the tool had a other set of hands pry the tensioner with a wood hammer handle an set the bolt in fit the belt, then release the belt slowly buy the bolt an make sure ur marks stay aligned on ur pullys

My timing belt broke on my 99 ford ranger 2.5L. I got it to run by aligning the triangle on the camshaft and the TDC in the center of the notch, and the diamond on the oil pump pulley. However I am now receiving a Cam Shaft position failure. What does the cps detect when piston is at top dead center, or do I need to change out my CPS?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger and the Idol was high so I cleaned the Throtle Body. Then the next morning for work I started it up it still ran high in idle then all of a sudden it started missing like it was running on Five Cylnders instead of Six. Any Ideas on what I should do? It's still running rough!

Yeah If we all could Afford Chiltons We'd all be better off, Back when I was In High School That was all my Teacher would let use. Shoot that book even told you what size wrenches to use or what size bolts and what thread count.
