02 focus BAD GAS MILEAGE

Hi, I have an 02 ford focus, has 71000 miles on it, did a complete tuneup this past fall, even had ford replace the EGR tube for the 2nd time, and I can drive 30 highway miles and use a 1/4 tank of gas,, anyone have any ideas what is wrong, I've been to a private garage who told me I needed a new transmission because it's not shifting from 3rd gear to overdrive,, found out nothing is wrong with the transmission and I can't afford to trade cars,,, any advice as to wear to go next with this will be greatly appreciated....

Check your intake for air leaks. if you get extra air in the intake, to compensate, the engine will put in more fuel to get the 15 to1 ration needed to run. I once got 2 miles to a gallon on a ford and it was a crack in the intake. Still ran great but just got no mileage out of it. I cried when I burned up a whole tank in 40 miles.
