Dan D wrote: The radio volume knob in my 2002 Ford Focus does not change the volume click by click. Sometimes it does not change at all and sometimes it jumps several levels. Also, the automatic radio volume does not increase the volume when the outside noise iis increased. Any ideas? Dan D I have no suggestions... but mine does EXACTLY the same thing, and it's really really irritating. I bought the car used in the summer of 2009 and the volume knob has had this problem the entire time I've owned it, but it has been slowly getting worse. I also had a problem where the 6 disc changer got really badly jammed, but after taking it to a bunch of different places that wouldn't fix it (but offered to replace my radio with something nicer and said they could rescue my CDs only during that process), I fixed it myself by forcing Uncle Kracker into it until something snapped. So now that works great. I've actually just recently started looking at replacing my radio. I LOVE the big Playskool buttons on the factory model, but I can't get service for it anywhere, and fighting with the volume knob is getting old.

Kraig wrote: My Mom owns the car....she recently emptied her 6cd shuffler and now neither the am or fm radio will play...but insert a new cd and it plays....strange...I thought at first she may have a mute button that she accidently hit but could find none....any ideas?????? Shufflers that are add-on or external to the in-dash stereo require a device between the antenna plug-in and the unit. The Cd shuffler in the rear of the car actually broadcasts the sound through the wire into the Stereo in the front dash by the antenna port on the back of the unit. Your problem sounds as if someone removed or needs to remove the device between the antenna and the stereo. If your in-dash CD works, its because it doesn't need the antenna the way the shuffler did. There is also a fuse back there, behind the unit, in the harness, check that too. If you don't have the DIN removal tool, get one, it's cheap, found at local parts stores.

You seem to know what you are talking about so could you advise on my problem? Very occasionally (about once every 6 months) the FM radio tunes in. Other than that it constantly searches, even in very good reception areas. AM reception is fine and the CD works too. Do you have any advice, please? Thank you. You hit the button that lets you remove the small faceplate piece. The piece where your radio preset buttons are. When pushed, this button lets the faceplate automatically spring forward 1/8" to 1/4", not very noticeably, and doesn't fall out of place. Check to see that the piece has been pushed back in. After that, it should work fine. jully wrote: I accidentally pressed the small button that is located underneath the volume/on&off button. And now my radio won't turn on at all! Help me! I've got just the opposite of what many describe. I also have an '02 focus, it's got a 3rd party stereo in it, the CD works fine, the FM works fine, but AM won't come in AT ALL. Not even the 50,000 watt station that I can usually receive anywhere. Any ideas?

Is there any significance to the high number of 2002 Ford cars that seem to have radio probems or is it just a function of my search

Seems that Ford installed bad sound systems in most Focus Models, especially around the 2002 period. My radio doesn't work at all now, but CD's play fine. I have found no solutions for my problem and have been signed up to this forum for a long time hoping to see a fix. I guess it is time to get another system. I got used to the silence.

I've had two radios in my 2002 focus--second one put in by Ford right before Katrina. During my evacuation the FM radio began to fade in and out. Within a few months the FM was gone but AM still worked. Eventually, maybe 2 years later, AM quit working. 6-disc changer has always worked until today and now it says CD-error and automatically changes back to FM, which doesn't work. Cannot eject AND the CDs in there are from the library, so I've got to find a way to get them out. Oh volume knob has gotten increasingly worse in last 2 years. Friends call it 'volume roulette' when I try to change volume. Is it better to replace with a focus radio/cd player or get a different brand all together (and maybe something with an AUX input)?

I solved the radio problem and the Focus problem. I rear ended a Toyota Venza, The Venza looked like someone scratched the rear bumper with a garden rake and the whole front end of my 2002 Ford Focus ZTW was crunched. My insurance company totaled my Focus, not knowing about the radio problem! Dan D wrote: The radio volume knob in my 2002 Ford Focus does not change the volume click by click. You can make the removal tool from a metal coat hanger - I saw it in a video and made it first try. Cut a straight portion anad bend into a U with legs parallel and same distance apart as the little open squares each side of the radio. Trim the ends until they are the same length. Make 2. Push them in then open them apart and pull gently.
