What are you towing?? Test drive them both and see what feels right. If you are going to be making a living off the truck, I would say go for the 5.4.

DO NOT go with the 4.6 in a truck, weak and sucks gas as bad or worse than the larger engine.
I get 11 mpg with my 99 f-150. maybe 12 1/2 on a long road trip.

Just a family truck . Hauling a 16 ft flat deck trailer with quads..... I'm looking for good fuel milage but a little power also. Everything I hear leads me to the 5.4 though

I have no idea why they make it. But, much as I love them, Fords get crappy gas mileage. I am looking at a 98 Mustang convertible and not that I care as much about mileage on that car, still it is a thought. If I have to lack power shouldn't I get some better economy in return?

i hav a 99 f150 with a 4.6 as well i got about 10mpg (incredibly depressing) and talked to others that get like 17... i just bought an edge programmer and now i get 15 which is really helpful and could potential pay for itself over time but still kinda sad...i think the issue is i hav to high of gears for that small of an engine but not sure im still gonna play around with it

I just took a 500+ mile trip. I filled up with a Mid-Grade gas this time. Now I got 17 MPG. The best I ever have with this truck. I have done a few minor things ( K&N airfilter, Bosch Platinum 4way tip plugs etc.) but not a ;chip' or anything.

I wonder if it is case of regular octane gas being a crappy weird formula here. I am told Metro Minneapolis has a anti-smog formula. Or perhps it is just the octane. LAt week we made the same drive in my 2000 Taurus SEL with the one year only 24valve DOHC aluminum engine. I used Mid-Grade again and got a 7MPG increase. Grated it is city v/s hiway in both cases.

Anyone else have fuel quality ideas? How about economy chips or programing?

I do hope mr. Obammy's Clunkers program has rid the counrty of most of the F-150 4.6's.
I guess they are nice in a Mustang, but I say no way in a F-150.

I have a 99 f-150 extended cab with the 5.4, it has 239,000 miles on it with no problems, I changed spark plugs and coils at 150,000. I have been avg 18-19 mpg on 25 mile drive to work, mostly interstate some city. With a 8000 pound horse trailer I drop down to 11-12 mpg.

Just bought a 2010 super cab F150 with a 4.6L. My old truck was a 2003 crew cab with a 5.4L. The world has changed men. I loved my 2003 but the 5.4L sucked gas. It was hard for me to get over 12mpg. After a test drive of the 2010 4.6, I knew this engine was fine and not underpowerd. With 3 valves/Cylinder and a 6 speed transmision it had more power than my old truck with the bigger engine. On the highway I can get 22 MPG with the thing. This engine is almost pushing 300 HP Mixed driving I can get 17 all day long. Let talk about modern design 4.6L not 5 or 10 year old designs.

Are you saying all 5.4 have issues or certain vintage? Half truths make people like yourself look brain dead. I believe you just make a statement that has limited truth.

I just bought a 2010 F-150 XLT Extended Cab 4X4 and couldn't be happier. Great mileage. I've only got about 800 miles on it at the moment, but the on-board computer sez hit's averaging 18 mpg. Every time I've filled the tank, the mileage has improved. I realized I have a 36 gallon tank the other day, after pumping in 27 gallons and the computer said I was still able to go another 170 miles before filling the tank again.
I'm not too crazy about the 'No Cap' fuel system tho........I want a LOCKING CAP !!!!!!! Not just a sealed fuel door (with NO LOCK !!!!!)
Yup, the 3 valve V-8 with the electronic 6 speed can't be beat with me, but I'll never be hauling anything except a couple of Harley's by either loading them into the bed (not at the same time) or hauling a lite-weight trailer with both on the trailer.

You have a very high opinion of a certain person today, believing that they can do no wrong. But how realistic are you being? It looks as though you're viewing the world through rose-colored glasses, which is fine if it's only a temporary state but quite another matter if you're deliberately ignoring problems and pretending that they don't exist.
